Taking Stock. September 2014

It is time to take stock, so here we go.  Do you stop to have a little assess every so often?  I like doing this exercise as quickly as possible, not trying to be smart ass about it, just tell it how it is (within reason).  Less thinking, more thoughts. If you fancy a go, I have left a blank list at the end for you to copy and take stock in your own life.  If you like you can share in the comments or leave me a link to your ‘stock’ and I will pop over for a gander. This list is copied from the wonderful Pip at Meet Me At Mikes, go and see what she is up to, I guarantee it will be something interesting! Making:  Furry clutch bags!                                                                                       …

Growing into Grey.

How is my grey grow out going? I am pleased you asked, because here is a little grey grow out update.   I have about 6cm of natural hair colour proudly marching over my head which I suppose I could get cut shorter to loose the dyed red ends altogether.  But I think I am going to keep the style I have and not go all Jamie Lee Curtis on my hair. Her hair is nice, but I don’t want it that short. Not that short and grey anyway. I have had very short hair before, so I wonder why I don’t want to go short again and get rid of the faded red dye? Answers on a postcard please… Maybe because that is the archetypal grey look, apart from the granny curls followed by a blue rinse.  Or a purple rinse.  You don’t see many blues and purple rinses about in the grey set any more do you?  Maybe I should bring it back,  I fancy a purple rinse but hold the perm please. …

15 reasons I am a good Mum.

I read this post over at Writing Wishing via Miss Elaine-ous Life and decided to take Alison and Elaine up on the offer to write about why I am a good Mum, in my humble opinion. We are often so self doubting in the parenting department, each book and advice filled blog telling us something we should or absolutely should not be doing.  Are we doing too much or too little?  Pushing the kids too much or not enough?  Phew, it is exhausting to think about.  So, let’s have a little think about all the fab things we do and how well we do them. Are you a Mum? I bet there are a million reasons why you are a good Mum, want to share? Leave a comment or write a post and leave me a link in the comments.  Don’t be modest, go for it! Here are 15 of my Good Mum moments. 1. My 13 year old still talks to me and walks with me and sometimes even listens to me.  We went to Warped …

Car-less or One Car Less? Life with Fewer Wheels.

When I was a kid, in the 1970s and a teen in the 1980s, our family had one car and so did everyone else.  I don’t think I knew any family with two cars, unless they were proper fancy.   If Mum needed the car one day, she would drive Dad to work and collect him after, so we had the car to zip around in all day.  Usually, we would catch the bus into town or walk to the village and all help carry bags home. One of the first things I noticed when we moved to the United States 11 years ago was the overhead wires and cables, everywhere, wires in the sky across the garden and the roads, making the clouds ugly.  The other thing I noticed was the amount and size of cars people own and drive.  Every house seems to have a massive people carrier the likes of which were only used in the UK for trips involving a group of people and often a camping trip.  Filling a car …

A Day Out at Delmar Loop and Rocket Fizz

Throughout the summer break we have been out and about in the local area and this week was no exception.  It is sometimes a challenge to find something that both boys want to do now they are 9 and 13 years old, but a trip to the Delmar Loop including Rocket Fizz was something everyone agreed on. We caught the Metro Link train over there in the morning to try and beat the heat a little.  This didn’t work as the humidity was already making the air thick and hot, but we had a candy and soda shop to visit, so no-one cared about being too hot (okay, I might have moaned a little bit). On the way along the Loop we passed a few cool signs, so I had to take a couple of snaps!  I love the peacock sign and the man soaring into the sky in his fancy tuxedo was a must! We headed into Rocket Fizz and I for one was happy for a spot of air conditioning!  It was ‘Taste …

10 Mom Tips to Survive and Enjoy Vans Warped Tour

1.  Get there early (really early, like 3 hours early), watch bands plug their set and sell CDs, get free bags and stickers.  Take a small bottle of water for the wait.  We were lucky with the weather, but the sun is still beating down as you stand still in a line, ready to pass out due to dehydration at any minute.  My mini zip loc of raisins saved my lining up experience, not cool, but remember it is not my job to be cool, I’m the Mom! 2.  Make a note of who you want to see and which signings you need to attend.  Choose wisely as everything overlaps.  You can buy a schedule for $2 but we just made a note on a card I had in my bag.  Leave enough time to line up for a week and a half for signings (get there early if you can). 3.  Check out the local flora and fauna, boys in undies, everyone with ear plugs and gauges (it’s a thing) lots of coloured hair and …

The (grey) Elephant in the room

The elephant no-one wishes to speak of isn’t just in my room, he follows me wherever I go, I may need to give him a name.  Feel free to name him in the comments… You see it’s my hair, my growing out, my going natural, my grey hair.  In fact it is not even my grey hair which encourages my friendly elephant, it is the combination of the left over red dyed hair which joins the grey on my head. I began growing out my dyed hair in a bid to ‘go natural’ in the head department back in April when I wrote about it here.   There are no pressing reasons I want to stop dying my hair apart from the inconvenience and the growing ineffectiveness of said dye.  I get grey peeking through within a week and I feel like I may as well embrace the grey rather than fight it with dubious chemicals every few weeks. There have not really been any wavering moments of regret yet because I think I am …
