‘I like’ Friday. Top Tips from vintage books.

IMG_2631

I recently picked up some excellent books from the library sale cart and the local antiques mall. Old books are among my favorite things, the covers, the advice and the illustrations.  I love the books which were obviously very fashionable and cutting edge in their information at the time of publication.  Of course some of the writing is out of date and sometimes hilarious but a lot of it is still relevant and timeless.

‘New Bodies for Old (Why, Where and How to Exercise for Figure, Beauty and Health)’ by Dorothy Nye  was written as a guide to exercise written in 1936 and it has some sage advice for would be exercising ladies.

On the first page, second paragraph we are treated to the following wisdom about the ideal body shape.

“It is, primarily, a figure of bone and muscle over which a silken skin stretches in taut perfection. ” No pressure then….

IMG_2633

They use the Rockette dancing chorus from Radio City as an ideal, citing measurements to aim for –

IMG_2635

Top tips from Ms Nye in a question and answer style.

Will walking reduce? No, not unless you do a great deal of it. Walking is mainly a leg exercise. It’s real benefit is that it induces deeper breathing of fresh air and increases the circulation, and this helps to throw off the body’s poisons. However, if done in cities it is oftentimes more harmful than beneficial because of the crowds, the traffic and the stale, dust filled air. If you mush walk in the city, go to the park or open spaces and walk there.”

Can women do the same exercise as men? No. A woman wants flexibility and grace rather than strength. She wants long, lean muscles rather than bunchy muscles. Therefore she should take exercises which include the whole body rather than those which concentrate on chest and arms such as are generally given in men’s gymnastics.”

What sports do you recommend for women after forty? Swimming, horseback riding, golf, bowling, fencing and tennis – if one has played them before or starts them very gradually. Also rhythmic dancing, if not too strenuous at first.”

Best go and grab my rhythmic dancing shoes then!

Finally and one of my favorites just for the wonderful metaphor –

Should I continue to exercise all of my life? Yes; one bath doesn’t keep you clean more than a few hours”

IMG_2636

The next book of wisdom for today is ‘The Glamour Magazine After Five Cookbook’ by Beverly Pepper which was published in 1952.

In the introduction we are advised – “This book was originally planned, when it first appeared in magazine form, as a chart to aid the working girl who comes home, tired and spent, from her office only to face the insurmountable problem preparing an original meal for her husband or companion.”

Each day has a meal plan along with the recipes and the book is split into months and weeks of the year. Every single meal is finished with a drink  –  coffee,  black, iced or coffee with lemon peel, tea, chilled tea, cold milk or even ice cream cupcakes.

Here is the page which would be for today, Friday of the first week of August.  Sherried strawberries anyone?

IMG_2638

Some recipes include –

Porcupine apples – Cover mounds of canned sliced apples with whipped cream. Pierce all over with blanched sliced almonds.

Avocado with sherry – Halve a ripe avocado. Remove pit. Pour sherry into each half.

Broccoli with grapes – Cook as directed. Drain. Garnish with 1/2 cup halved grapes in 2 tablespoons butter.

Tropical hamburgers – add 1 mashed banana to your regular burger ingredients.

Luxuro cakes – Fill 4 sponge shells with vanilla ice cream. Top with chocolate sauce and salted almonds.  Sounds luxuro indeed!

“So deck your table with flowers, or maybe just leaves and candlelight. Sit down with a smile and a happy heart. It’s your victory-enjoy it. Remember, however you slice, bake or casserole it-it’s food, it’s fun, and like life at times, it can be out of this world!”

Words to live by there from Beverly Pepper herself.

My Daily Moleskine 2017. July Pages.

Half way through the year and half way through my Moleskine Daily Planner as I create something on each day.

It continues to serve as a visual diary as much as a creative habit because I will stick down stickers or business cards or things I have found that day.

Here are some pages from July.

IMG_2620

I was making some collage pages and used the left over paint here!

IMG_2621

Left over collage pieces with some paint and china marker added.

fullsizeoutput_8c4

My Goodwill haul and some sun prints.

IMG_2623

We were painting watercolor flowers through July and some strayed into my Moleskine along with a moon.

IMG_2624

Predictably, another flower!

IMG_2625

Black gesso and a test of some face stencils I bought.

IMG_2626

A catalogue card from an old library book and some ephemera from a parcel sent from my friend in Finland.

IMG_2627

Some flow acrylics on a vintage photo and a copy of an old cigarette card in some colour.

IMG_2628

Sumi brush and watery ink flowers.

IMG_2629

I removed the spine from an old book to use the covers to make a sketchbook, so I stuck it down and added some pattern and paint.

I hope your July was wonderful and your August will be even better.

‘I Like’ Friday

Lots of things to like this fine Friday!

IMG_2574

A modest trip to Art Mart to get some book tape.  Came out with deep violet high flow acrylic, gold fluid acrylic a new sepia pen and a Jon Snow key chain (for my teen).  Any art shop which sells Funko Pop key chains has my vote!

IMG_2566

Moon phase stickers from Stickerdoodles.

IMG_2569

I keep borrowing this fabulous book from the library, it might be time to buy it!

IMG_2570

Stunning cigarette cards from the gorgeous shop of Beets and Birch.  I adore these cards as I already have lots which my grandma gave me.  Mine are a mix of tea cards and cigarette cards. They were given away in each pack of tea or cigarettes until the 1970’s I think.  Grandma kept all hers and gave them to me in the 1980’s carefully kept in a ‘British Home Stores’ bag! I am very pleased to have these cards to add to my collection.

IMG_2565

The new Art Journaling magazine has two of my Get Messy friends inside it’s covers (not literally, just their work…!).  Torrie of Fox and Hazel and Karen Gaunt both of who are such inspiring artists and always generous in sharing knowledge and ideas.

IMG_2572

I am really enjoying the Fluid Art class from Amy Maricle of Mindful Art Studio. So far I am still addicted to making little discs of colour and movement.  I have my white pens at the ready to work into some circles with doodles and drawings.  I keep my discs in an old Golden Virginia tin just like my Grandad used to have when I was a kid.  I would wash them out and store my treasures in them!

IMG_2567

IMG_2568

Finally I dissected this book so that I can give it new life as a sketchbook.  The book tape in the first photo will strengthen the spine so I can sew in some mixed paper signatures and use it as my next art journal.

What have you been liking this Friday?

Art Marks 30 Day Summer Challenge, my journal so far.

I am joining Rae Missigman again this summer for her Art Marks 30 Day Summer Challenge which started on July 15th.

Encouraged to work small for this adventure, I made a little sketchbook using kraft paper and textured paper with a Ray Bradbury paperback for the cover.  I put lots of pages in it so that I could do more pages as I feel inspired and hopefully fill it up.

Well, I am nearly halfway through my book and only on day/prompt 12 out of 30, so I am excited that I will fill my little book up!  Yay.

IMG_2546

IMG_2547

Day 1. Dense.

IMG_2548

Day 2 and 3. Scrawled and Curved.

IMG_2549

4. Geometric.

IMG_2550

5. Ruled. I had to use part of this vintage ledger page, it is ruled and someone has written Fish and Chips on it!

IMG_2551

6. Wide. This wide washi tape was on an envelope my lovely friend send me, I peeled it off before I even opened the letter!

IMG_2552

7. Interrupted. I interrupted this girl with a tree.

IMG_2553

8. Blurred.

IMG_2554

Illustrations from a discarded library book and I had to use them.

IMG_2555

9. Freeform.  Abstract flowers using my sumi brush and ink.

IMG_2556

Back of the flower page and Day 10. Open.

IMG_2557

The bears wanted to be in my journal!

IMG_2558

Day 11. Blended.  I put four colours on my brush to make the stripes then added some water to blend.  Details are with copper and a nib pen.

I am putting no pressure on myself in this mini art journal, only to make a mark/page or two or three every day and I am enjoying filling it up!

Daily Creating April-June 2017

The 100 day project overtook my posts on my daily Moleskine, but it didn’t overtake the actual project.  I have to say that creating little daily art spaces in my Moleskine diary has been a joy this year.

I literally put anything in there that I want to. I may be learning a new technique and a page will be used for practice or I may find a sticker which will be added or someone will send me a postcard and that will be stapled onto that day.

It is becoming a record of the year as well as a creative practice.

April’s pages were all made using Rae Missigman’s prompts for her Mark Making Monthly challenge.  It is always nice to have a jumping off point for each day.

IMG_2470

IMG_2471

May was back to me and I made marks, stuck stuff down and splashed colour about!

IMG_2475

These ladies were in a discarded library book so I cut them out and gave them new accessories.

IMG_2476

There is always something to draw and paint, these vintage tins hold my pins (Sucrets) and a selection of mini pearl buttons and some marbles (Boots).

IMG_2477

Found items such as feathers are always a nice thing to paint and record.  I was making a collage in my art journal so I popped one in my Moleskine too.

IMG_2472

Practicing a new technique and painting a lady from a magazine using my sumi brush and pink ink.

IMG_2473

National Geographic magazines of all ages are great for images.  I couldn’t resist this bird.

IMG_2478

Or these costumed characters.

IMG_2479

Horoscopes are always good for a spot of entertainment and I often rip them out of a magazine to keep. The little lady with the dogs under a ‘scribble tree’ which was one of my 100 day project ideas.

IMG_2480

I am often found in the woods hunting for treasure with my teen, so many pages in my Moleskine have sketches of what we found,  I had to have a couple of run ups at the brooch!

IMG_2481

I was playing with marbling my own paper and made a moon, I added a multi colored hair lady and a fortune from a fortune cookie.

IMG_2482

More technique practice.

IMG_2483

Half way through the year and an already bulging diary!

I am very much enjoying this daily project and love how my Moleskine is filling up with colour and ideas.

Are you doing a daily challenge this year?  How’s it going?

What did I do this weekend?

It has been a hot and sunny weekend here in the deep mid-west!  It did rain last night and that was very welcome.

I had a single ripe tomato on my plants and this morning when I went to pick it, it had gone, stolen, presumed eaten.  One of our furry long tailed garden friends I am sure is the guilty party.  I always try to grow lots of tomatoes to share with the squirrels but to take the very first ripe one, that was mean. Lesson learnt, when I see a ripe tomato, don’t leave it, pick it!

Over the weekend  I bought a few new art supplies in the form of acrylic gouache and some basic kraft paper to make sketchbooks from.  I love the colours this gouache comes in and choosing a few was a difficult job.

Weekendblog1

I bought this book from the library sale cart for a whole 25cents!  I don’t think I will use it for anything except sitting on my shelf because my grandad was a morris dancer and it reminds me of all the dances we used to watch as kids!

Weekendblog5

Of course we ended up at the antique mall for a quick look around.  I wasn’t going to go in, but I am pleased I did as I bought this ‘Larousse Illustre’ encyclopedia/dictionary.

Weekendblog4

I love that it is called ‘Nouveau Petit’ because it is neither!  I already have a 1930’s edition which is gorgeous and compared to that, this one is a much newer 1952 edition!  As for the petit, it is certainly not at more than 1700 pages!

Weekendblog2

Weekendblog3

It is full of wonderful illustrations.

Another thing I stumbled upon this weekend was the new 30 day mark making challenge hosted by Rae Missigman, I found it a couple of days in but catching up is no problem.  I decided I would like to make a mini journal for the challenge and try to fill it up.

I made a couple of stacks of paper and needed a cover.  Then I remembered the good old library sale cart, I saw a Raymond Bradbury novel with a great cover on Friday.  I raced to the library 15 minutes before they were due to close and grabbed my prize.

It was the perfect size for my two signature book.

Weekendblog6

Apologies to Mr Bradbury, I have never read this book but I did hack the cover off to use for my sketchbook.  However I love my sketchbook very much!

The paper inside is plain kraft paper and some textured whitish pale greenish paper I bought a few weeks ago from my local art store.

So that was how I filled up my weekend, as well as a couple of visits to the gym, doughnuts (keep a balance!), dog walking and dodging the heat.

I hope you had a lovely weekend.

100 Days of Creative Ideas 91-100. I did it!

I did it! I staggered over the finish line clutching my energy drink and feeling my legs get wobbly.  I checked my finish time and yes, I made it.  100 hundred ideas in 100 days.

IMG_2404

Here are the final ten.

91. Go to the grocery store and find something to use as an alternative art supply. I used a toothbrush and ink.

92. Use a natural object or plant as a brush or pen. I used some ornamental grass in a bunch as a brush then one stem as a pen.

93. Write a poem about Tacos! Maybe an illustration to go with it.  Here’s mine

Do you like tacos?

I can’t get enough

But only if they are filled

With lots of tasty stuff.

94. Start a sketchbook at the back and work forward.

95. Draw or cut out two faces which are about the same size and facing the same direction. Cut each in half and stick the mis-matches together to make a new face.

96. Write a children’s story. Make it into a book, or a comic strip or just on stapled sheets of paper. Make it long or short, rhyming or just pictures.

97. Make sun prints. Put sheets of construction paper outside in direct sun. Place some objects on the paper  and leave it for a few hours. Remove the objects and admire your prints.

98. Use your sun prints. Make them onto characters or into a pattern.

99. Use found objects to create a picture.

100. Some of my favourite books on creating –

Drawing and Painting Beautiful Faces by Jane Davenport

Journal It by Jenny Doh

Doodle a Day by Chris Riddell

Illustration School – Let’s Draw by Sachiko Omit

Creative Revolution by Flora Bowley

Ladies Drawing Night by Julia Rothman, Leah Goren and Rachael Cole

Make Your Own Ideabook by Arne and Carlos

Creative Girl by Danielle Donaldson

Draw Every Day, Draw Every Way by Jennifer Orkin Lewis (August Wren)

Little Book of Bookmaking by Charlotte Rivers

Craft for the Soul by Pip Lincolne

Your Inner Critic is a Big Jerk by Danielle Krysa (The Jealous Curator)

Phew!  All done.  I feel like I had some good ideas and some slightly not so amazing ideas, but I had 100 of them and I used the blank catalogue cards I bought at a school estate sale earlier this year to write them all on.  Now I have a lovely pile of idea cards for when I am in need of a creative boost.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in The 100 day project and thanks to Elle and Lindsay for organizing and encouraging!

3. We went to the newly opened Clementines Creamery  on De Man Ave in St Louis, the ice cream was amazing and I liked the floor!

4. I messed about with ink and ornamental grass for one of my 100 day project cards.

5. I am painting a watercolour flower a day along with Creative Bug this month.

Get Messy Season of Colour/Color Week 5

This season is flying by and has been one of my favorites which I think may be because I made my own sketchbook from paper bags and an old giant atlas and I have tried to not put any pressure on myself with any of the pages. This has sometimes worked and not always worked if I am honest.

I don’t want a half full book, so I am working to fill it and I don’t want to turn over a page I don’t like without finishing it (I would totally do this in a bought sketchbook).  This has meant that on more than one occasion I have had to slog through a page which didn’t start at all well and keep working on it until it transforms. I am happy to say that I have ended up with successful pages in my eyes.

I have been enjoying the prompts and the tutorials provided by the Get Messy team this season, to the extent that I haven’t done nearly as much as I have been inspired to.  At least I know I can revisit and carry on in between seasons!

IMG_2346

I really wanted to make a monochromatic page so I chose purple as my base colour.  A bold move as purple is not my favorite.  I mixed some white, black and grey gesso to provide a variety of purpleness and found a couple of images from magazines as my starting point – which was a black page from the atlas and a shopping bag page!

IMG_2347

IMG_2349

As I painted and covered and painted and covered, I was not loving this page one little bit.  I even picked up my gesso and plastic card at one point to cover the whole lot and start again.

There were a few bits I did like, so I carried on.  The card and paint did have to cover that dreadful writing though!!!

IMG_2352

Some china pencil, Posca white pen, a few vintage postage stamps, more paint and all done! If things aren’t going as you want, keep going, it will turn out well in the end!

IMG_2329

In complete colour contrast I also made a couple of pages using collage shapes which started as colorful patterns on vintage typing paper and dry wax paper. I did a page of each colour on each paper and cut some shapes from each.

IMG_2350

This was the first page I made with the collage paper (on paper bags) and I enjoyed creating it and I kept some negative space to highlight the colours.

I had lots of patterned paper left and the page before (it is the map peeking through on the right) wanted some colour too!

IMG_2351

So I grabbed my matte medium and my big paintbrush and ripped the collage papers and glued them down to overlap and mix with each other.  I love dry wax paper for this because once it is glued down the paper is transparent and only the paint shows. I made this last page quickly, only pausing to check the balance of the colours and it is my favorite this week.
