Practise practise practise.

  Practice or practise? Just as I figure out the difference, I read that practice can be used for the verb and the noun here in the States. I think I will play my British card here and still use the different spellings or the next thing I know I will be calling yams – sweet potatoes and tortoises -turtles. Language is a funny thing isn’t it, how it gets changed even when we are speaking the ‘same’ language. Anyway, I was thinking about practising some drawing and how much I should practise and how long for and then the question which holds me back more than any popped up – Why? I have a strange relationship with practising something, anything. I am happy to do it, but look at it as a waste of time, maybe not so much a waste but I unconsciously limit the amount of time I allow myself to draw or crochet or learn Photoshop (the last one is on my to do list…). This week there are lots of things to like, especially that the sun is out and the snow is melting, we are looking at Springlike temperatures over the weekend and into next week!  Here are some of the things I have been liking  – The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.  This is a book I want to keep picking up even just to snatch a page here and there.  A page turner for sure! Watercolour painting.  I haven’t painted in years, so I treated myself to some brushes and paints and I am about to embark on the watercolour class over at Creative Bug.  I have lots of ideas, now I just need to get the brush on the paper!  I think watercolour painting is so pretty, colours all seem to look beautiful, I can’t wait to get started. Lettering.  My ongoing love for hand lettering seems to get more fired up every day.  The March ‘Girl Fifteen Letters‘ challenge is going well, we are up to the letter F already.  Lots of …

This week I am liking lots of things, the arctic weather we are having is not one of them! Check out this fab post about making your very own font from Tiny Rotten Peanuts.  I am going to give this a go this weekend. There are some good t shirts for Red Nose Day this year, my Mum is sending me the Matthew Williamson ‘Do my Feathers Look Big in This?’  one, because I am spoiled! I am still having a blast with the Tinkersketch challenge, I might just finish the month! There is a plan in my brain to do my own personal challenge through March – a hand lettering practice.  You should join in too!  More info next week (when I have figured it out…) The book I am reading is a really good one – Ella and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper. The Diaries of a Teenage Me.

I kept a diary from when I was 13 years old until my thirties and sparodically to the present day. I planned a post this week about how my eldest is now 13 and how I have a record of my teens in the form of my diaries. Well, I am sorry to disappoint, but it was too horrendous. Looking back on my 13-14 year old self captured for all eternity in the pages of an Alice in Wonderland Secret Diary (with a lock), it was too awful. I can hardly bear to read the teenage angst and general nonsense  I wrote. Just awful. Only a few years from the first entries when I was about 15 or 16, it became a mite more readable for me, and I found lots of stuff I could not remember, not even when I read it, no recollection of a trip or an encounter with another person.  I thought reading about an event would take me right back to it (thankfully not in many cases!).  I realise that …

Sketching with the Tinkersketch challenge.

For the month of February I have been joining in with Tinkerlab and doing the Tinkersketch daily challenge. I tried it last year and only made it part way through the month. This year I am loving it! We are half way through February (yikes) and I am still going strong. I see some of the sketches on the #tinkersketch feed and these folks can draw, I mean really draw, their quick sketch is an accurate portrayal. I am more a shapes and colour kinda artist! That said I am very happy with what Tinkersketch has pulled out of my idea cache and I am looking forward to the rest of the month. Well this week has seen all sorts of decisions and new things for me, all good things!  We have seen snow and sun and ice in all kinds of order and the weekend is supposed to be sunny and warm so we are looking forward to that. I have been drawing and painting and reading and catching the train and borrowing library books.  I hope you have had a good week and are having a happy Friday. Here are a few things I am liking today – The new Jamie Oliver magazine which I bought today at the international newsagent nearby, I am sure I am at least one issue behind, but I get them eventually! Magma sketchbooks are so gorgeous to look at and they make sketchbooks for specific areas like fashion or idea generation. Home made scented balms and solid perfume, I am looking into the best ‘recipe’ and playing with scent combinations!  So fun! Our local Goodwill store, I got a lovely little vintage pyrex bowl and I found the boys a Nerf …

‘I like’ Fridays, featuring macarons and watercolours.

Today I very much liked the macarons I was given by my lovely friend!  Yum yum!  Aren’t they the prettiest confection?  Beauties on the outside and tasty on the inside! This fine Friday I have also been liking these things – Starting a Sketchbook class with Lisa Congdon as recommended by the talented ladies at Squiggle and Swirl and TIny Rotten Peanuts.  I bought a brand new sketchbook, paints and brushes today which was very exciting!  I don’t think I have bought new watercolours since college. I can’t wait to get started. This curry recipe from Beets and Birch is on my menu for next week. Reading Frankie magazine, although I am about two issues behind Australia where the mag is published.  I still enjoy it, reading about summer when it is winter here and vice versa! Finding some vintage treasures at Recycled Couture.  I scored a lovely Bill Blass floral skirt and a teal dress from the 1960’s which will be great over jeans.
