Six Word Saturday

I spotted this fishy window as we passed the flower shop today and had to snap a pic!  Strangely I have always admired the windows of this shop, but I have never been in.  I think I need to pop in sometime soon.

Happy Weekend!

Through the Lens Thursday 30. Stairs.

This week’s prompt has got me thinking.  What is the difference kind friends between stairs and steps?  All I can find in my direct vicinity are steps, up to porches, down to basements, into shops, even rock steps in the woods, but no stairs.  I class stairs as the steps (confused yet?) which are inside a house, apartment block, department store or theatre.  They are often carpeted, but still stairs if not.  Why?  Why do I  go up the stairs in my Mum’s house to the next floor, but I go down the steps to my basement and up the steps to the porch.  In stately homes there is always a sweeping staircase, never sweeping steps.  They are essentially the same thing, why the different name?

You take ‘steps’ as you walk but you never take big ‘stairs’ to get somewhere faster, but bigger ‘steps’ will get you there quickly.

So alas, I have no stairs, only steps for my photo!  Pretty darn cool steps though, check out the ivy climbing up step by step.

Through the Lens Thursday. Stairs.

We are now at week 30 in Through the Lens Thursday and each week I learn something else.  This week the strong light caught me out big time, most of the pictures I took were bad and bright.  In this one I think I caught the strength of the sunlight without it naturally overexposing everything.

Do you take a ton of photos to get the right one, or do you know your numbers?  It is good to learn lots of new stuff and I certainly am here!

Printing Instagram Photos. Let’s print ’em and keep ’em!

Instagram printing

Do you print photos?  Any photos?  Regular phone and camera shots are easy peasy to get printed, but fancy having your fabulous Instagram squares in your hot little hands?  Want an album of them or have a box filled with them?  I love to see photos printed in albums or in a lovely box or tin.  There is something special about leafing through an album or rifling through a box of photo memories.

Whatever you do, don’t send Instagrams to a regular printing place as regular prints, you will get a strange 6×4 print with part of your lovely Insta square picture on it, I have plenty of these from before I found places to print Insta’s as squares.    Lots of places do Instagram printing now in various sizes but always the signature square.  Yay!

Instagram prints

I usually send mine to Walgreens and look out for coupons for bargain printing, Insta prints are more expensive than regular, so a coupon is worth having!  Walgreens is my local drugstore, so that is best for me, but I bet most places that print regular photos print squares from Instagram now.  Send them to print online and pop down to the store to collect. Simples.

Another option for your prints is using someone like Printstagram who will turn your fab photos into prints, double sided prints (great business card idea), cards, stickers, magnets….the list goes on.  They are reasonable and the quality is great.  I have had stickers and cards from them and have always loved the results.  Insta prints made into cards make a lovely thank-you card for birthdays and Christmas.  Get some great pics of the kids, and make them into cards to say ‘thanks’ or just ‘how are you’, family will love em!  Usually we do this for birthday ‘thank-you’ cards and they are always a hit.

Instagram prints in Project Life pages

What to do with these printed wonders once you have them on paper?  Store them in a cool box or tin, but we all know you will end up with hundreds and they may need a little more organising.  I use the Becky Higgins ‘Project Life’ system for my printed photos as they do an Instagram size pocket page.  I am no scrapbooker (yet!), but I love this system for photos and adding a few extras in the spare pockets.

I have seen lots of other print services for Insta, but these are the ones I have used and like.  What do you do with your Instagram photos?

I am @girlfifteen on Instagram.  Tell me your Insta name in the comments and I will come and find you!

Through The Lens Thursday 29. Cozy.

Tea Cozy

For this week’s Through the Lens Thursday I chose a tea cozy.  I made it black and white in Snapseed.

Next week is stairs, which might be a hard one as there are no stair here!  I will need to go and find some.

Simple Wrap Bracelets by CatsEatDogs

I have been a busy bee since I had an idea to make some new wrap bracelets,  keeping them really simple and retaining the lovely organic look I love to create.   A kind of stylish friendship bracelet, casual and pretty, featuring vintage buttons to fasten.

They like to be worn together, but also play nicely alone.  It is all I can do to stop myself throwing all three on and keeping them for myself!

I see many combinations of beads and colours for these in my near future!

They are going in my Etsy shop today or tomorrow, I wanted to share with you first.  What do you think?  Like them?  What colours are you loving at the moment?  I do like the blue one best I think, I just love the denim blue of the thread.

Weekly Photos 28/52 and Purple.

Last week was spent mostly swimming and watching the sunflowers start to bloom.  The giant sunflowers have no blooms yet and are over 6 feet tall, the flowers are on the slightly shorter plants.  It is lovely to see how they change every day.

We have had hot dogs and s’mores over the fire pit and even some marshmallow roasting over the hob when my youngest told my teen that he is a ‘professional cooker’ as he toasted the marshmallows!  I love it when the kids say daft things to each other and always make a note in the diary!

Did you see the full moon on Saturday night?  So cool.  As it rose behind a huge tree the silhouetted leaves made the moon appear to shimmer and sparkle behind them as they gently rustled in the breeze with the moonlight seeping through.  We stood and watched it, mesmerised, the moon was so pretty and we caught it at just the right moment.  I wish I had video to share, but none of my visual appliances would capture it, so we just watched and remembered.

The week’s colour as part of Color/Colour Lovers project  was purple, I only managed a couple.

5.  Is this not the best snail mail ever!  From Naomi at Naomi Loves.  She paints and draws on all of her mail which you get when you subscribe to her blog.  Beautiful.

Have a lovely week!

Six Word Saturday

Six Word SaturdayThis morning I checked on the sunflowers and I noticed these twin flowers, almost joined in the middle, but still two independent sunnies battling for the same growing space.

They have only just bloomed, so I will be interested to see how they do grow.

This is my Six Word Saturday.  If you have one, please share in comments or on Instagram using  #sixwordsaturday and I will come and find you!

Homemade Pizza Two Ways

We make lots of pizza in our house, sometimes I am told it is too regular on the family dinner menu.  Boo to that, I say!  I love making pizza, it is so easy, the hardest part is remembering to make the dough far enough in advance to allow it to rise.

Everyone can have a blob of dough and make their own pizza shape and variation and get all floury in the process!  In the interest of listening to the mob and trying to make pizza more interesting I decided to make a couple of variations to see how they worked.

The first one is an idea from Pizza Express in the UK and when I had this pizza a couple of years ago when we were home, I was flabbergasted – what a simple but fab idea – why I (or anyone else for that matter)had not thought of this before, I don’t know.  The pizza has a hole in the middle which is piled with salad.  Well, how hard can this be I thought, I snapped a photo to remember, not to Instagram – honest, that is a part of Insta I have managed to steer clear of, like nail art……..anyway back to pizza with a hole.

What I can’t believe is that I have had this idea swimming about for a couple of years and only made one last week and no, I didn’t need to reference the original photo.

Homemade pizza with a hole and salad

Homemade pizza with a hole and salad

How on earth did you do that?  I hear you cry!  Here’s how.

I made the dough using half this recipe, then once it is in a pizza shape, I used a big round cookie cutter to cut out a hole in the middle.  It doesn’t turn out a perfect round in the middle, more a rustic circle.

Make the hole once the pizza is on it’s cooking pan, a Lifesaver/Polo shaped pizza is difficult to move successfully as I found out!   Be sure to flour the cooking pan well so that the pizza doesn’t stick when it is cooking.

Add toppings as you normally would and cook for slightly less time.  Once your lovely pizza is done, fill the middle space with your favourite salad and be proud of your healthy pizza with built in salad!

Homemade stuffed crust pizza

Homemade stuffed crust pizza

This second pizza was our attempt at a stuffed crust, we made a regular (ish) pizza shape and rolled the edges over string cheese to make a cheesy filling all around.  The recipient of this pizza is not into regular tomato sauce so I just popped on some olive oil, olives and rosemary, topped off with parmesan.  Not as healthy as the salad pizza, but a fun pizza for a change.

Do you make pizza?  These two would of course work with store bought dough, so go on, have a go and let me know what shapes and variations you come up with!
