Earth Day DIY Upcycled Necklace

This week I saw a lovely necklace made from painted wooden beads and decided to make one for myself.  I have some wood beads which I bought from the Upcycle exchange here in St Louis and they are ideal for this little project. A spot of upcycling and DIY on Earth day, don’t mind if I do! I grabbed a few colours of the new ‘Hand Made Modern‘ craft paint in Target. It took me a few minutes to decide on a palette, there is great range of colours.  Once home, I ripped open a used paper shopping bag to protect the table, cracked open the paints and got painting. To keep hold of the beads without getting  myself covered in paint, I put each one on a cocktail stick so that I could hold it to paint and then balance it across a narrow necked jar to dry. Just be sure that the stick reaches each side of the jar or beads fall and paint is ruined and swears burst forth.  I may have …

Sunflowers on Earth Day

As yesterday was Earth Day, we planted our Sunflower seeds.   Some were arranged nicely in pots to get them started and some were chucked into the dirt and see how they do! We are growing ‘mammoth’ sunflowers this year to see how tall we can get them.  Mr Y is having a race with Grandma and Grandad who also have ‘mammoth’ sunflowers to grow across the pond in England.    Seeds have all been planted at around the same time, so let the races begin!  Grow sunflowers grow! How tall will they get I wonder?  Rest assured I will keep you updated on the sunflower growings, photos and measurements, no details spared.  Betcha can’t wait!  We only planted them yesterday and I am already looking out for sprouts… Are you racing sunflowers?  You should!

Happy Earth Day! Remember to recycle and reuse. Walk or bike where you can. Plant some vegetables or some flowers or some herbs, or all of them! May your trash can be empty, your legs be strong and your garden green! Talking of recycling, look at this fab McCall’s Needlework and Crafts magazine from Spring 1977.  In 1977 I was seven years old and into ‘Sindy’ dolls and ‘Spirograph’. These crochet flowers are gorgeous and check the fake soil and moss! Creepy or cute? Same question.  I quite like the gangly rabbit, but his teeth look like they want to eat me, or those mice.  Pick the mice Mr Rabbit. Of course I adore these macrame pieces.  I think they are a little bit cool, even the tiles they are photographed on are cool.  I love the statement on the opposite page ‘macrame jewelry is always right!’  Maybe I will steal that tag line for my catseatdogs jewelry! Now, here is something I want to make.  Peas in a pod which unzips!  That place mat …
