Weekly Photos 20/52

1.I haven’t spotted as many mushrooms this year as usual, but I was impressed by this little cluster which I managed to snap as the dog was trying to pull me away to carry on with her walk! 2 & 3.Our local library hosts a reading club every summer, kids, teens and adults each have their own and this weekend was time to sign up. They set up a kick off party at the firehouse where we had hotdogs and cake before signing up for a summer of reading and prizes.  I stood on my tippy toes and got a few photos of the fire equipment and I thought these helmets looked ready for action. 4.I haven’t planted as much in the garden this year as I would like, but I am so happy that everything has started to grow. This is a pot of coriander/cilantro. 5. The banana pepper is thriving! 6. I was overjoyed to see my first sweet pea flower. 7. The hydrangea flowers are done for now, so I deadheaded them …

Weekly Photos 9/52

Looking at these photos, all of them have library connections!  I have had a library week. 1. A side alley and side building in Clayton, MO.  I took this on the way back from the library where I had just picked up some new books. I liked the ‘windows’ and the sunlight. 2. This book was heading back to the library but I liked the idea of the feather/leaf potato prints, so I took a photo of the page to refer to later. 3. On the way to my local library and I enjoyed this magnificent sunset. 4. This is why I was heading to the library, mug decorating craft night. All supplies were provided and the even was free, how cool is the library! 5. Later in the week I got a tour of the ‘below library’ storage area where there is this rather fab, if precarious spiral staircase. It used to go directly to the fire house which was once housed above the library.  I wouldn’t fancy navigating these stairs in full fire …

Weekly Photos 25/52

Almost half way through the year and for some reason it doesn’t feel like it is whizzing by which makes a nice change. We are fully submerged in summer until August and always thinking of things to do which is not always easy now the kids are getting older. No-one wants to pop to the park anymore with nothing but each other and a bag of Goldfish for entertainment. Highlights of our summer to come are likely to be the ‘Minions‘ movie and going to see the polar bears in their new enclosure at the zoo.  It gets super duper hot and humid here, so we have to be out and about in the mornings before the sun becomes too melting. Some photos from the past week. 1. Following a week of constant rain some mushrooms have popped up in the woods, this Chicken of the Woods is a spectacular one and edible.  Would you eat it? 2. Teeny figures I found thrift shopping on Cape Cod, the fella with the long nose can also …

Six Word Saturday

This afternoon we went to the local library to make new action heroes (and anti heroes as it turned out!) from old figures. After years of telling my kids not to ruin their toys, here we were ripping heads and arms off to our hearts content. Lots of new creatures were created and a ton of fun was had! If you have a Six Word Saturday, feel free to share in comments or on Instagram, tagging me @girlfifteen, so I can see. Have a fab weekend!

Things I have been doing this past week.

This has been the first week of school summer holidays for us because we have been away for two weeks. It has rained and rained which brings slightly cooler temperatures, but along with it lots of wet which rules out outside stuff. So I have been snarling at computer games a lot and rejoicing when someone wants to play a human game like ‘Othello’ or some drawing gets done! I have kept up with ‘My Fitness Pal’ on my phone which hasn’t been as much as a chore as I thought it would be. It is certainly an eye opener though, where those calories are hiding. Blimey. I have never been a calorie counter, so I am watching carefully.  I am guilty of ‘saving’ calories on some days so that I can have a beer or a glass of wine, but I have been keeping to my quota which I am pleased with.  I wonder if it will work?  I only want to lose a few pounds, so fingers crossed. I have also been to …

My Favourite Things

I am participating in a super fab blog course called ‘Blog with Pip‘ which is taught and supported by Pip Lincolne of the Australian blog ‘Meet me at Mikes‘. Along with the other students I am joining in a group post called ‘My Favourite Things’. If you pop over to Pip’s post, the rest are at the end, along with mine! So, My Favourite Things are? Well, all sorts really, want to see? Okay here we go. Vintage anything, my latest find was this 1970’s wrap skirt.  It is floor length and I love it! Being able to go into the garden and grab the herbs I need for those nachos or that pasta dish.  Growing things, especially food, is the best. Reading aloud to my youngest son, I am aware that he soon won’t want me to read to him so I am hanging onto this for as long as I can.  At the moment we are reading ‘Itch’ by Simon Mayo and it is very good, very exciting and suspenseful. Taking photos, even …

Children’s Books we like.

Bodhi and I have just finished reading ‘Wonderstruck‘ which is another amazing Brian Selznik book, if you have not read ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’, go go go and borrow it from the library, you won’t be disappointed.  The film is great, but the book is so much more. ‘Wonderstruck’ is a book of words and pictures and the two lives in the book run perfectly together.  Ben’s story is in words and Rose’s is all illustrations.  A very satisfying ‘read aloud’ book for bedtime for the reader and the listener alike. We are now reading ‘Hero on a Bicycle’ by Shirley Hughes.  We liked her picture books when the boys were young and this novel is not disappointing so far.  Set during World War II in Italy, it is very descriptive and captures the events in the story vividly.  We are only part way through, but we are looking forward to reading the rest of the book. On the pile to read next is ‘The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket’ by John Boyne …
