1.  The trees are just starting to change into their Autumn colours.

2.  Newly listed wrap bracelet in my Etsy shop, this week I am working on some necklaces. Yay!

3.  We spotted these bright orange beauties on the way to school.

4.  At the weekend we cruised the ‘Tri City’ yard sale event which is held locally.  Lots of yard sales to check out and I saw this lovely Spinning Wheel but left it behind.  I don’t see spinning in my future!  Love the graphics on the box though.

5.  We have seen this Box Turtle in the woods a few times this week and on Saturday he was walking up the middle of the road, so we intervened and took him back to the woods.  I hope he wasn’t on his way somewhere important…

6.  Apparently this soda was discontinued in the early 1990’s, so this was a cool find in the woods this weekend.  I like the graphics on this label too.  Amazing to think it was laying in the undergrowth for at least two decades and the colours are still nice and bright.

The mornings and evenings are getting cooler and darker as we head into Autumn, it has been pretty warm in the afternoons still, so definitely layers weather.  Are you enjoying the early Autumn or the early Spring?  I am very much loving the Autumn!

Through The Lens Thursday 39. Away.

Through The Lens Thursday 39. Away

Through The Lens Thursday 39. Away.

For this week’s Through the Lens Thursday our fearless leaders from GFunkified and Writing Wishing blogs prompted us to take photos around the theme – away.

So I grabbed my vintage luggage and took a pretend ‘going away’ photo.  I would love to use these cases to travel, at the minute they have wool (big Samsonite) and buttons on cards (mushrooms) in them!

While I was getting my settings sorted on my camera, I noticed the blimp way up in the sky, pretty far away.  Double ‘away’ whammy this week.  I feel like a bit of an over achiever!  Ha.

Are you participating in any challenges this year?  Photography or otherwise.  How is it going?  We are into the last third of the year, so if you are still keeping up with your challenge I applaud you.  It can be pretty hard to keep momentum even with a weekly challenge such as this.

I also do a photo a day with Fat Mum Slim‘s prompts and I have got into such a habit with it, I check my prompt every morning and keep my phone with me to capture suitable pics.

Happy Thursday!

The Art of Looking.

Do you think that if you are looking for something, you will find it sooner or later?  I am not  talking about envisioning a suitcase full of money and eventually it will show up, but if you try that, let me know how it goes!  Nor do I mean that you find everything you think of, blimey that would be a hectic time wouldn’t it.

I mean if you are thinking of someone lots they might show up in the same aisle as you at the grocery store, or they may call.  Have you ever called in on someone and they said ‘I was just thinking about you’.  That has happened to me many times.

I like the heart rock search as a great example.  Have you ever found heart shaped rocks on the beach or in the fields?  Have you looked?  People have collections of heart rocks and I always thought it so amazing that they are just found, right there, under our noses.  I had never seen a heart rock and I am always looking for cool things on the beach or even just on a path, so why don’t I just see them?  Well, I suppose because I am not looking for them.

While we were on holiday a couple of years ago, I thought I would try and find some heart rocks, and I did.  I saw heart shaped rocks, seaweed and shells.  How did that happen?  Is Cape Cod the mecca for heart shaped flotsam and jetsam?  No, I was looking.  Looking for hearts and I found them.

I still find heart shapes all over the place, in the creek, in the woods, leaves and rocks, even a heart shaped puddle once!

image

Creek glass and a heart shaped rock.

Talking of the creek, we have been in it lots of times, paddling about and helping clean it up during the annual stream clean held locally.  Never found anything of any interest.  Until we found a couple of old bottles in the woods then a nail varnish bottle from the 1940’s and random marbles in the creek.  So, we started looking, searching for cool stuff.  Guess what?  We found it and we still find bits and bobs all the time.

image

Nail Varnish bottle and shoe polish bottle both from the 1940’s

So far we have found lots of shards of stream glass, pieces of old pots and crockery (we are still looking for the cutlery), marbles, ornaments, whole pots and a whole jug, more bottles and some buttons.

How do we suddenly see these things?  They must have been there all along, we just weren’t looking.  Once we started to find marbles, we joked about finding a marble every time we went to the stream and we really do, almost every time we look, one of us finds a marble.

Once I found a whole bowl, a small bowl, but it was intact and in good condition.  I was very happy with this find and popped it in the bag to give it a nice clean up when we got home.  Only a week or two later, I found another one, exactly the same, also intact.  What a lovely coincidental find.

Twin bowls and the creek marbles.

Another time I had just watched a film called Time Zero, about the demise of the Polaroid and the rise of the Impossible Project and I got to thinking that I would pull out my Polaroid camera and grab some film for it.  The very next day what did I find in the creek bed?  Three negatives all stuck together.  Look like they were taken at a zoo, I wonder which one?  There I was thinking of photos and film and I find these.  Would you believe it?!

image

I wonder when this tiger had his photo taken?

Just to be clear, I am not citing voodoo or any magical powers, just wondering at life’s coincidences and enjoying them!

Does this happen to you?  Pondering something in the back of your mind, and there it is!

Chihuly Glass at Missouri Botanical Gardens

1.  A fancy new bracelet in my Etsy shop.  Have I mentioned how much I like to make things!?

2.  A very neatly nibbled mushroom.

3.  Some of the first Autumn leaves.

4.  A big mushroom in my neighbour’s yard.

5.  Rocks forming the base of the creek.

6.  Blue and yellow, the perfect contrast.  Chihuly glass at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, I have to photo this every time we go!

I hope you had a good week and this week is even better!

Taking Stock. September 2014

Mushrooms

It is time to take stock, so here we go.  Do you stop to have a little assess every so often?  I like doing this exercise as quickly as possible, not trying to be smart ass about it, just tell it how it is (within reason).  Less thinking, more thoughts.

If you fancy a go, I have left a blank list at the end for you to copy and take stock in your own life.  If you like you can share in the comments or leave me a link to your ‘stock’ and I will pop over for a gander.

Through The Lens Thursday 38. Tall.

Through The Lens Thursday. Tall.

Tall.  I found a tall tree.

Predictable, I know, but I quite like the focus spot on the bark and the bright tree tops in the distance.

Thanks to Greta at Gfunkified and Alison of Writing Wishing for coming up with Through The Lens Thursday and many congratulations to Alison on the birth of her beautiful twins.

Next week’s prompt is ‘Away’.  Happy Thursday!

Pom Pom Acorns

Acorns and leaves and mushrooms and pumpkins. All lovely Autumn things along with apples and chilly night-times and sunny days.

What better way to celebrate than with a slice of pumpkin bread, a rosemary syrup latte and a cute pom pom acorn or two!

I had some big acorn cups hanging around (as you do) and I decided to make some mini pom poms to create little fluffy acorns.

image

To start I made little pom poms using the smallest maker I have which makes poms about 4cm across.  I trimmed them into an acorn shape keeping them the right size for the acorn cups.  You can trim them down as small as you need, just be careful not to cut it in half!

Pom Pom acorns

I used liquid glue around the inside of the acorn and popped the pom pom acorn in.  Ta Dah!  Pom pom acorns.  Why not make lots for a lovely Autumnal display?

Weekly Photos 37/52.

Last week we saw sun and rain and a flooded park as well as mushrooms and a day out!  Did you have a good week?  I hope so!

1.  I made some new earrings for my CatsEatDogs shop over on Etsy.  I like this style because they are dramatic without being over the top and lightweight to wear.

2.  Lovely Hydrangeas with a dewy glaze.

3.  Mushrooms!

4.  On Wednesday it rained and rained and on the way to gymnastics we had to detour around the park because the creek had flooded up and over onto the park and path.  It was cool to see, but the water was flowing pretty fast, so we made no attempt to wade through it.

5.  The next day the creek had receded back to normal levels, so we popped on the wellies and went exploring.  The creek bed was very different following the storm, new deeper parts, more rocks revealed and new things to find.  We rescued the American flag from the side of the creek and I found a little pot which was all in one piece. The pot is  exactly the same as one I have found here before which was strange and amazing to think that in all of that flowing water a pot was left which matches the one I have already found in the same creek.

6.  At the weekend we went on a day trip to Hermann which is an originally German town west of St Louis and surrounded by vineyards and wineries.  This is a shop window I liked.

7.  Hermann Star Mills and clouds.

8.  On the way home we spotted a Watermelon farm stand so we picked a ginormous watermelon for $3!  We had to cut it up and donate some to our neighbours before it would even go in the fridge!

A good week was had and here is looking forward to the week ahead.

Through The Lens Thursday 37. Black.

Black Mother of Pearl buttons

For this week’s Through The Lens Thursday I dug into my button collection and pulled out some of my favourites, the black Mother of Pearl buttons.

Some buttons I use in my jewelry making and some (like these), I keep in my favourites jar.

Next week is tall, so that will be an interesting one.

Happy Thursday!

Growing into Grey.

How is my grey grow out going? I am pleased you asked, because here is a little grey grow out update.

I have about 6cm of natural hair colour proudly marching over my head which I suppose I could get cut shorter to loose the dyed red ends altogether.  But I think I am going to keep the style I have and not go all Jamie Lee Curtis on my hair. Her hair is nice, but I don’t want it that short. Not that short and grey anyway. I have had very short hair before, so I wonder why I don’t want to go short again and get rid of the faded red dye?
Answers on a postcard please…

Maybe because that is the archetypal grey look, apart from the granny curls followed by a blue rinse.  Or a purple rinse.  You don’t see many blues and purple rinses about in the grey set any more do you?  Maybe I should bring it back,  I fancy a purple rinse but hold the perm please.

I don’t think I am quite ready for a new cut as well as a new colour, even though I have been watching the grey/white/brown emerging since April I still think of it as a ‘new’ colour.  I keep pulling my hair back off my face to get an idea of the final natural grey look, sometimes I am a bit alarmed, but mainly I am quite liking it.

To be honest, not having to dye my hair is a complete joy in itself, apart from the excessive chemical application almost every month, I just don’t miss the fuss and potential horror of dyeing the sink or my shoes or the bathroom floor by accident.  I did flick dye onto the bathroom door once by accident and that didn’t go down too well especially as I hadn’t noticed until it was well and truly part of the white door.  Whoopsie.  Have you had any dyeing mishaps?  That was my only dyeing oopsie.

I have been totally noticing grey ladies of a certain (younger) age lately and making little mental notes, all positive, I still think that natural dramatic grey is a fab look.  Let’s see how dramatic mine ends up, hopefully more grey gorgeous and less George Clooney (yes, I know he is a handsome devil, but I want to look at him, not like him thanks).

So, after all this, I am pretty sure I am on a single track to natural grey hair in my forties and I am quite happy with that.  If you want to see where this all started, have a look here (on my old blog) and here.
