‘I Like’ Friday. The secondhand Edition.

Estate sales.  I love them. Estate sales, jumble sales, rummage sales, yard sales, car boot sales, thrift shops,  Goodwill shops, charity shops and if I went to Australia I bet I would love Op shops! It is like an adventure in casual shopping, I say casual because you can’t really go to any of these places looking for a very specific thing.  I always have in mind what type of thing I am looking for, but I keep my eyes open and remember to look at everything! Shopping somewhere like Goodwill means that you are focused on colours you are drawn to, styles you like and your size, rather than what the stores want to direct you to buy.  I love to browse the jeans, where are you going to get a better selection? Goodwill have all styles from Old Navy to Lucky Brand and Gloria Vanderbilt via Levis and Ann Taylor Loft.  I have discovered that Banana Republic and Ann Taylor Loft jeans are the best fit for me thanks to Goodwill.  I have …

My Thrifted Finds on Cape Cod 2016

Thrifting on Cape Cod is great because most of the various churches here have a thrift shop. These vary in size to teeny tiny to a few rooms big. They are not to be judged by the size either, one of my favourite finds is from the smallest shop I have been to. At the weekend there are yard sales and flea markets too which in my opinion is where you get the best finds. These are some of the thrifting treasures I have found so far. 1. A party recipe book from the 1950’s and a how to draw animal book. The recipes are classic and bizarre like ‘meat loaf’ and then over the page is ‘rice with avocado sauce’. 2. Along with th animal and party books I also found a book from 1965 on how to grow and avocado from a pit. Very specialist this one! 3. At a yard sale I picked up this coffee mug and at another yard sale I spotted the brushes. They are not Van Gogh standard …

Thrifting on Cape Cod

It will come as no surprise to you that I actively sought out thrift and antique shops while we were on holiday in Cape Cod. There is a plethora of church thrift shops over there which are great places to find some amazing stuff if you are willing to have a good root about, and I am willing! From a church thrift shop in Chatham, I found a lovely little cup and saucer with the most delightful design. I feel inspired to draw lots of cute buildings every time I look at it. It is Danish, but I am not sure how old it is. One of our favourite shops on the cape is Buddhas and Beads in Eastham and it was there that I can across a box of goodies which included these pelican key chains which are all ready to be mailed at the costly expense of a 4 cent stamp. I can’t find the pelicans online, but it appears that stamps were 4 cents in the late 1950’s. On the other side …

First yard sale of the year this morning, we got the giant car and some beads to hack up, wash and recycle. This amazing vintage suitcase was literally sitting on the verge and apparently had been there for a week, we checked there was nothing weird inside and claimed it as our own. After all we are supposed to get some exciting weather with snow and ice and rain and snow and ice, so, it would get ruined if it was left outside. I cannot believe how fast June has zipped by (I am sure I say that every month!).  At the same time, when I look back at the photos from the beginning of the month, they seem so long ago. We have been on holiday to Cape Cod for two whole weeks, then I was back in St Louis for about 10 minutes and I was off to New York for the Alt Summit and a lovely weekend in Brooklyn. It has been hot and cool and wet and stormy. I followed the A Month of… prompts from Just B Australia for most of the month, but by the last week I was back to Fat Mum Slim.  Apparently it is harder to break a habit than I thought!  I do enjoy the FMS prompts though even though they do circle round on a regular basis, but that just makes for a new photo challenge, n’est pas?! Nearly going home

Aren’t holidays brilliant? I love them and this has been one of the best ever, two weeks in Cape Cod. We have have had all the weather available except snow and loved it! What else is brilliant about holidays? Going home! I love the going home part. I don’t love the trip to the airport and the waiting and waiting and taking your shoes off and holding up your jeans while they check your belt for any deadly metal. Mine has no deadly metal, it is a very kind belt, but it is needed in the ‘holding up my jeans and not flashing anyone while I take off my potentially killer shoes’ department. The boys went fishing and caught weed and something so huge it chewed off the fishy lure thing on the end of the line. We spotted lots of wildlife, including horseshoe crabs, gray seals, a coyote which was very cool and just behind our cottage (eek), birds birds and more birds, fiddler crabs (whoever invented those things was clearly drunk) and chipmunks …

I love treasure hunting, in thrift stores, yard sales, jumble sales or estate sales and antique shops.                                                Yesterday on the way to the bank with the boys we spotted an estate sale and, because they are as bad as me, we had to check it out!                                                         The ensuing treasure hunting make me late for pretty much everything I had to do through the whole day, but I got some rewards. Bargains were, a pretty little white bowl which I will use for mixing beads – 50c, some assorted wooden beads (which will most likely always stay in the vintage jar I have stored them in, but I love the colour and shapes of them) – 25c  and a little cartoony doll head – 25c.   …
