‘I Like’ Friday. The Cape Cod Edition.

While here on the Cape I am finding lots to like! I have definitely been liking daily trips down to the beach which is a few minutes away. The weather has been everything and everywhere so the sea changes colour each time I visit. Today it is my favourite colour – Paynes grey. I always like to bake bread so why not on holiday?! We went to the local Barnes and Noble and stocked up on mags and I needed a new book so I grabbed ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’. Have you read it? Any good? I saw this book in a second hand shop and liked the look of it because it is chock full of butterfly plates. So when I spotted it in the local library (yes, I am the person who gets a library card while on holiday!) I happily checked it out. Here are some things I am liking this fine Friday – I have been using smoked paprika a lot in recipes lately and I love to put it on fries, especially with an egg. Yums! Zines and handmade books  are the subject of a new Creative Bug class which has totally made me want to make a zine or two.  I have been making sketchbooks lately and the zine format is very appealing. The book I am now reading is Harmless Like You by Rowan Hisayo Buchanan and I am enjoying it so far.  I started a couple of books which I gave up on, but I think this one is a winner. Neocolor II crayons are my art supply of the moment.  I used water soluble crayons in art collage about a hundred years ago but I have not revisited them until very recently.  I have a handful of colours and I love to use them with a little water or gesso to spread them around. Some things I am liking this fine Friday, last day of March. Posca pens are something new in my art supply arsenal and I love them!  I have tried and failed with paint pens before, they seem to either explode all over the page or they don’t work at all. Posca pens work like a dream and no explosions yet! Making your own books is also a new thing in my world and I love it! So far I have only used the basic bookmaking skills and I intend to venture out further into the bookbinding forest with the help of these classes – Get Messy Art Journal Bookbinding and CreativeBug book making. ‘Grand Designs’ is our nightly viewing at the minute but we are nearly at the end of the Netflix supply, so will have to find another watch.  Any recommendations? Hot cross buns are always a winner at Easter and I like to make them aplenty before Easter!  I have a batch in the oven right now in fact.  I use the recipe …

‘I Like’ Friday. The mini journal edition.

I started working in one of my mini journals today,  and I love it love it love it!  Each page is  a little quick delve into colour, collage and drawing.  I have used acrylic paints which dry nice and quickly, so I can work through the journal without having to wait ages for paint to dry. I started with my new friend, the ‘owlat’ which came about in a previous page and I thought the image looked like a owl crossed with a cat.  I drew this one more deliberately, guiding the triangles as I went. The fold out pages are fun and I tried to make them work with each other and the pages around them by adding a similar flower motif in pen (I used white Uniball and a blue Micron). I am becoming very interested in old photos as well as postcards and this is a copy of a vintage photograph.  I wonder who she was? I was visiting my friend Annette at her lovely blog I Give You The Verbs today and she has a great post which is a list of things she likes.  So, I grabbed a cupful of inspiration and here is my list of things I like.  Appropriately on ‘I like’ Friday. Yay. Snapea crisps in black pepper flavor – I just discovered them and they are super duper good! Buying paints in a lovely colour palette, I went to ArtMart for Glow in the Dark paint and came out with a handful of fabulous colours.  I can’t wait to try out the Glow in the Dark! Painting with the above! Reading a good book, I look forward to reading every night and I am so disappointed when I find that I really am not enjoying the book in my hand. I am about to start a new book called ‘We Are Unprepared‘ so I hope it is a good one. Libraries, I hunt out the library wherever I go! Sunshine, it has been so gloomy …

‘I like Friday’ 13 things.

On this icy cold Friday 13th I am sharing thirteen things I have liked this week. The new Hipstamatic lens/film park – Boulder is super cool and I also am loving the Frutiger film which adds the random imagery to your picture like the typewriter on my shed door above! The seeds below are taken with the Boulder pak. Project Runway Junior is rather addictive as usual! Lots of tea in my biggest mug. I have been using my vintage Polaroid Onestep 600 with a Duo-Chrome 600 Yellow film and it is very dramatic.  Instead of the pale tones they are replaced with yellow. Flora Bowley books, YouTube and Creative Bug videos are so inspiring to me at the moment, her method is much freer that I usually do, so I am trying to loosen up in my paintings and art journals. Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman is another fabulous read by Mr Backman.  So good. After falling in love with the A3 Moleskine sketchbook, I discovered a giant Strathmore 500 series mixed media sketchbook. It …

‘I Like’ Friday. The secondhand Edition.

Estate sales.  I love them. Estate sales, jumble sales, rummage sales, yard sales, car boot sales, thrift shops,  Goodwill shops, charity shops and if I went to Australia I bet I would love Op shops! It is like an adventure in casual shopping, I say casual because you can’t really go to any of these places looking for a very specific thing.  I always have in mind what type of thing I am looking for, but I keep my eyes open and remember to look at everything! Shopping somewhere like Goodwill means that you are focused on colours you are drawn to, styles you like and your size, rather than what the stores want to direct you to buy.  I love to browse the jeans, where are you going to get a better selection? Goodwill have all styles from Old Navy to Lucky Brand and Gloria Vanderbilt via Levis and Ann Taylor Loft.  I have discovered that Banana Republic and Ann Taylor Loft jeans are the best fit for me thanks to Goodwill.  I have …

This week I have been liking all kinds of things including autumn seed pod gathering and photographing! Here are some of the other things I am liking- I finished The Wonder by Emma Donoghue in a week which is a record time for me (remember I am the slowest reader in the whole wide world), it was so good.  The book is full of memorable characters with lots of twists and turns. I am feeding a sourdough starter as we speak using a recipe from ‘Bread’ by Dean Brettschneider . This is my second attempt as the first time I got a measurement wrong and a timing wrong on my first go.  Hopefully I will have a sourdough loaf or two in the next couple of weeks. Do you make sourdough?  I really hope it all works well after all of the feeding and measuring. I am participating in NaNoDrawMo this month and I have managed  to complete every day so far, which makes three days going strong! The Durrells in Corfu is one of my favorites to watch …

Get Messy Art Journal Pages. Season of Dreams. Week 1.

Do you remember your dreams? Do you write them down? How about dreaming in colour? I sometimes remember them but only very vaguely, unless I write them down (often at ridiculous times in the morning). When I write them down I tend to remember more as I write and end up with a garbled page or two of a dream. Then I go back to sleep and try and make sense of my sleep writing when I get up in the morning when more often than not, I have written more than I would have remembered had I not snatched up my notebook at 2am. The Season of Dreams started this week in the Get Messy Art Journal community. Getting creative in my art journal was not an easy task, the blank page and the blank mind almost stopped me from making any pages at all.  So I decided to look at my dream notes and grab some paints as one of my dreams was full of colours which I had written down. The weather has cooled at last and it looks like Fall is centre stage! This week I have been liking: The bag in the photo I found at an estate sale and I love it so much.  It is a souvenir beach bag from Mexico, I think from the 1970’s.  It is housing my new knitting project…. This fantastic scarf at Creative Bug.  I have started it in red wool and I love it, the pattern looks complicated but it is so well explained on the videos, it is very doable.  I can’t wait to wear it. ‘The Girls’ by Emma Cline is a great book so far, I am fully engrossed and intrigued by the story and the characters. I love to read and I always have to have a book on the go, I am an impatient reader though, so if the book doesn’t grab me, I will cast it aside and move on.
