Why I write.

whyiwrite

I have been handed the baton to write about ‘Why I Write’ from the gorgeous Karen of Leaf and Petal blog.    This has turned into quite the blog hop and the links are being gathered at Maxabella Loves if you want to see more.

What am I Working On?

This blog is what I am working on right now, it is kind of new, even though I have had a blog for a few years over at CatsEatDogs.  So I am working on keeping up the momentum of writing regularly and keeping myself interested and bringing you you along with me.

I am also working on painted words (like the picture above), I like the brush script look and am always painting on,  and sending cards and postcards.  Fonts are a wonderful thing to play with too, so I like to work cool fonts into cards to print and send.  Keeping snail mail alive!

How Does My Writing Differ from Others in my Genre?

I use lots and lots of photos and I like to add words and writing to my photos, literally as part of the image or alongside the picture.  There would never be any writing from me without a photo, I love taking pictures and sharing them.  Sometimes the picture leads the writing and sometimes the writing is the choreographer of the piece.  Either way works for me, I happily follow along.

Why Do I Write What I Do?

I like to share what I am up to (well, not all of it) as well as what jewelry I am making and putting in my Etsy shop.  The process of how I take photos or make jewelry is nice to share and it helps me see where I am heading sometimes.  I like to see what other people are up to, what they are thinking, making, crafting, painting and writing.  I know, I am nosey!

As well as online writing, I write letters and cards and lists and lists and lists.  Do you still send cards and letters?  I will send you a card or a letter if you e mail me your address to catseatdogs@sbcglobal.net.  One of the happiest things in the world has got to be a friendly letter in the mail!

How Does my Writing Process Work?

Notes, notes and more notes, ideas come to me from all angles and if I don’t write them in a notebook or on my phone, I forget the amazing idea (but still remember I had an amazing idea, which is unfair methinks).  I make sketches and take photos and write words, all part of the process.

A blog post may form, or a piece of jewelry or a design idea, even a dinner idea (hurrah for those!).

My writing and any other creative processes work best when I let them.  I try not to force an idea or a request, just let it form and feed it lots of thoughts and warmth.   Reading magazines and books also keeps the ideas mill running.   The rewards will come in the middle of the night when I jump out of bed to jot down an idea and hope it makes sense in the morning when I look at it again.

As long as the ideas keep coming I will be quite happy with jotting them down.

Now it is my turn to pass the baton onto other bloggers and I have two beautiful ladies to hand over to.

Jessica at Gus and Ollie makes the most adorable toys you ever did see, she sees a sock and makes it into a colourful, artful soft toy.   An Australian expat living in Hamburg, Germany; where she is carving out a creative niche and making the cutest little sock toy family you will find. All of her toys are one off and handmade by Jessica in her sweet little studio in the cobble stoned streets of Ottensen. Her blog focuses on her life and studio happenings, as an Aussie creative in Deutschland. She loves to take photos, ride her bike and to share her adventures all over the world – often with a monkey in tow.

Jo blogs at Blondie By The Sea and her blog is full of amazing photos and chock full of inspiration.

There once was a girl called Jo. She met a boy named Ben. They met on unconventionally on an online dating site, before it was cool.

Abs03 met Waikiki 77. A striped scarf was the key to their intro. They talked and talked. They lived on opposite sides of town. There were many months of long conversations and joint TV viewing over the phone. Soon the phone wasn’t enough and Jo moved North.

After a while a little 1950′s house was bought down South, near the beach. They madly stripped wall paper, carpet, renovated the kitchen and made the house feel like a home. They had two fur kids and lost one. They were so mournful over their loss they acquired another fur kid. Then they thought it was time to share the love and had their own kids.

There were hiccups along the way. Jo had depression, now has the post natal variety. Jo had a difficult relationship with her mum, Jo no longer sees her mum. Jo had two miscarriages, but eventually they had a pigeon pair, Immy and lil Cal.

She writes about (ahmmm will write about) her love of thrifting, crafting, cooking, kidlets and finding her chutzpah (moving past post natal depression) Sit down, relax, she’ll make you a virtual cuppa and will be ready for a chat.

Yellow yellow yelow, that is the colour I was looking for last week.  I found some on toys, at the Metro Link station, in a very bee full tree and water balloons (which look green when they are full!).  These photos are part of the Colour/Color project fearlessly headed up by the fabulous Xanthe and Andrea who both take the best photos you ever did see.

A week of slip n sliding, water balloons, cool mushrooms and plenty of rain.

1.  Trying out the new netting on his army helmet.

2.  Teeny tree in our neighbourhood catching the afternoon sun.

3.  Slipping and sliding.

4.  The Edamame tee pee is growing well, we even have a few peas.

5.  Red mushroom in the damp after a massive storm.

I hope your Monday is going well and have a fab week!

Six Word Saturday

imageToday was a Metro link day, we had a few things to do, so off we went, snapping a quickie of the track as we crossed to the platform.

Do you have good public transport where you live?  It is not bad here but most people drive.  I don’t drive so I catch the Metro a fair amount of the time.

Want to join in with Six Word Saturday?  Leave me a comment or join on Instagram using the hashtag sixwordsaturday.  My Insta name is @catseatdogsmakes if you want to come and find me.

Happy Weekend.

Through the Lens Thursday 25. Smooth.

For this week’s Through the Lens Thursday the prompt was Smooth.  Water balloons are a top feature in our summer, so today we stocked up and got wet.  We have had the ‘Slip n Slide’ out on the back grass the past two days so we were a wet muddy mess by the time we were done with today.  The grass is now a swamp and needs a couple of days to recuperate and dry out.

We managed to fill a little pile of balloons and not explode them, so I took a picture before we got wet and muddy!

imageNext week is ‘Imperfect’ and week 26 which is halfway through the year!  I hope you are having a good year and that the second half of 2014 turns out most excellently for us all.

Taking Photos of Jewelry

I have just added some new jewels to my little CatsEatDogs store on Etsy and as I was messing about in my garden taking photos while the boys ran around with Nerf guns, I thought I would share a bit of the process on here, with you all.

I like having my photography studio outside, which of course means I don’t have a studio (maybe one day, when I grow up) so I take photos in the natural light provided in the outside department of my house.

We have had the giant cable reel for ages and it is always being used as part of a base or some other adventure.  I scrubbed the top and gave it a brush and I like to use it for photos.

By the afternoon the garden has some soft shade so I can get photos without the glaring sun and it’s harsh light, shadows and reflections.

Amongst the Swingball game, the sweet peas on their circle of found bricks, the tomato plants and the raised beds, there I am snapping a few photos while avoiding falling over on the hose!

Do you dream of a photography/craft/writing studio?  Or do you just make the best of what you have – the garden/dining room table/your lap?  I would love to work out of a studio, but for now, I am all about making the best of what I have and a growing garden full of sunshine and my kids is pretty good!

Weekly photos 24/52 and Color/Colour Lovers Red

Second week of the summer and all is well.  The weather is getting hot and humid which means that the water balloons will most likely be deployed this week.

The lovely ladies of Hula Seventy and Xanthe Berkeley photography are hosting ‘Color/Colour Lovers’ the summer edition.  I joined in the winter project and it was amazing what you spot when you are looking for a specific colour!  Last week was red and here is what I found.  Of course you can’t have a red challenge and not visit the local fire house!  In fact all of these photos were taken locally.

Be sure to pop over the Xanthe and Andrea’s blogs to see their amazing photos.

imageIn other photo news, I snapped a few weekly photos too, which ironically all seem to be beige and green!  Apologies for the mushroom overload, but mama nature has been generous in the cool mushroom department this week. Next week there may be none (and I will be sad), so catch em while you can, that’s what I say.  I have no idea whether these are edible, but I am sure the bunnies and groundhogs will enjoy them.

We made s’mores on the fire pit which is always a summer highlight!  Especially when they are whopping double s’mores like these!

2. Giant mushroom with a dragonfly.

3. White flowers on a pink fence.

4. Mushrooms marching across the grass.

5. Double whopper s’more (or are they called s’mores no matter how many there are…?  Not sure)

I am linking up with Em at The Beetle Shack for her weekly still collection.

Here’s looking forward to a great week, hope yours is a good one.

Six Word Saturday

imageI can’t stop taking photos of mushrooms!  They have to be the ones which a fairy might be under and there are lots around at the moment (mushrooms, unfortunately I haven’t seen any fairies).

I used the fabulous Rhonna Designs app to make this picture.  Do you have any favourite apps?  I love this one, lots of great images and fonts.  The original photo was taken using Camera+ on my iPhone, this is a great app to get close up pictures.

If you have a Six Word Saturday or fancy snapping one, feel free to add it in the comments or pop it on Instagram using #sixwordsaturday.

Happy Weekend!

Through the Lens Thursday 24. Deep.

For this week’s Through the Lens Thursday the first thing which sprang to mind was a swimming pool – the deep end of course.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to stand at the edge of the YMCA pool taking photos of the deep end looking like a fool (I know, I shouldn’t care, but I do, it’s a problem).  So I wracked my brains and squeezed the creative juices, but I kept coming back to the pool idea.

Well, I did it, I asked the aquatics director if it would be ok and she laughed at me (kindly) and said of course I could stand at the end of the pool like a crazy person and take photos.  So I did and here they are, I give you – Deep.

I love how the water distorts the lines and the pool tiles, water is very cool, especially deep water!  Thanks Mid County YMCA for letting me shoot the pool!  Thanks also to Greta of Gfunkified and Alison of Writing Wishing for coming up with a year’s worth of photo prompts.

The (grey) Elephant in the room

The elephant no-one wishes to speak of isn’t just in my room, he follows me wherever I go, I may need to give him a name.  Feel free to name him in the comments…

You see it’s my hair, my growing out, my going natural, my grey hair.  In fact it is not even my grey hair which encourages my friendly elephant, it is the combination of the left over red dyed hair which joins the grey on my head.

I began growing out my dyed hair in a bid to ‘go natural’ in the head department back in April when I wrote about it here.   There are no pressing reasons I want to stop dying my hair apart from the inconvenience and the growing ineffectiveness of said dye.  I get grey peeking through within a week and I feel like I may as well embrace the grey rather than fight it with dubious chemicals every few weeks.

There have not really been any wavering moments of regret yet because I think I am still intrigued to see what it will look like.  Yes I do worry that I will look very very very old, but surely a lick of lippie and a coating of foundation will solve that?  We shall see…

Talking of seeing, want to see how the hair is progressing?  I want to stop dying altogether so I decided I didn’t want to get lowlights to try and blend in the grey/white/glow as it grows out.  I have about 3cm of natural and I am not willing to get it cut down to 3cm, so persevere I must.

image

Now, see the sun glinting off my head?  That is not just sunshine using me as a reflector, that is pure whiteness.  Just in that area, so this, my friends is going to be interesting.  I have to say that the texture of my newly natural hair is not awful (so far), it is not twanging out all over the place or feeling wiry, so that is a good thing.

image

People who know I am growing it out are interested as to how it will look, and are in turns horrified at the whiteness and encouraged by my ‘young’ style (ha).  I am hoping the summer will be forgiving as I really can’t wear lots of make up without it gently sliding off my face in the heat and humidity of the St Louis weather.  By the winter (if I haven’t desperately grabbed a box of hair dye), I will be lining up at the make up counter begging for help!

image

These last two pictures almost hide the grey although you can see some peeky white in the second one.

I can’t believe no-one has dropped hair colourist cards at my feet or taken me to one side to have a friendly ‘chat’ about my interesting roots.   My elephant has not been addressed yet, poor thing is feeling neglected, but I don’t mind him following me around until I get the courage to get it cut a little shorter, so that it looks less like I just need to dye my damn hair!

The adventure continues….

Weekly photos 23/52

This week was the first of the summer holidays from school and it went pretty well, the weather was kind to us and we had a day trip out to go up the Gateway Arch in St Louis and lunched at one of the food trucks at the City Garden.

Today is lovely and cool, but alas it won’t last, so we are enjoying it while we can.
