How to make a Pom Pom Carrot

Pom pom carrot!  I know, a pom pom carrot sounds bonkers and of course it is.  So what else to do, but to make one.

Here’s how.

Make three pom poms in graduating sizes, I used a cereal packet to cut my pom pom bases out and increased the size of each circle by 2cm each time, ending up with  4cm, 6cm and 8cm discs.  I used orange fluffy wool but any orange wool will be great.

20140219-141507.jpgFor the leafy top, I loosely wrapped some green wool around my hand a few times in an uneven manner and tied it like a pom pom and trimmed open the ends.  Almost like a very loose freeform pom pom.

20140219-141525.jpgSew them together using the wool already on the pom, include the ‘leaves’ as you sew the three together.

Have fun making pom pom veg and don’t forget to tell me what you made in the comments!

7/52 Weekly photos

First up this week are the weekly Color/Colour photos.  Green was the chosen colour last week and photo shooting was headed up by Xanthe and Andrea and Instagrammed in style under #color/colour.   I managed to spot some green walls, green trees and a fab old Robin Hood book.

The other part of todays photo collection is an assignment from Blog With Pip which is a fantabulous e course I am doing.  The course runs at intervals through the year and I recommend it highly, just the right combination of techy brain work and creative fun stuff.  Headed up by Pip of Meet Me At Mikes.

The homework was to take five photos over the weekend and here they are.  All of mine were taken in the antique mall close to where we live.

I managed to leave everything there, although I nearly gave into the cute sunflower salt and pepper pots and the Satellite Camera.

Must. Resist. Cool. Old. Stuff.

20140217-100510.jpgI snapped this last one while we were walking home from school one day last week and I clambered through the snowy trees to get a look at this hollow tree stump with a perfect snowy top.

Did you have a good week last week?  I hope so!  Here’s to another super week, hopefully with some sunshine and lots of good things.

Nonpareils and Through the Lens Thursday #7 Dull.

No, you are not a day adrift, and amazingly nor am I.

I  decided not to post my Through the Lens Thursday yesterday or it would have given away my Valentine treat for my husband and he looks at my blog, so that would not have been much of a surprise!

So here is the photo and how I made the Valentine chocolate treats.

20140214-102710.jpg
This week’s theme was ‘dull’, so I snapped these sprinkles which are dull in comparison to the usual garish coloured and shiny versions.  I took the above photo with my Canon, the rest are taken on the iPhone.

I still call these itsy bitsy sugar balls  ‘hundreds and thousands’ and I love them!  They are called  ‘sprinkles’ here in the States, what do you call them? Crunchy teeth breakers? Teeny coloured balls which look pretty on cupcakes and trifles for a few minutes then melt and bleed a tie dye effect all over the treat? Fairy balls? Nonpareils?

Whatever you call them, I like them best with chocolate on,  so I thought I would have a go at making some nonpareils for Valentine’s Day.

Nonpareils were called ‘Dazzle Drops’ when I was little and you could buy them by the quarter pound and get them in a little white paper bag which eventually got the tie dye effect from being held in hot little hands.  The chocolate always tasted like cooking chocolate but the crunchy brightly coloured topping was always worth the below par chocolate.  As well as the cooking chocolate ones, you could also get white chocolate I would often get a mix of both – tres exotic.

I think nonpareil is the strangest name for a candy/sweetie/chocolate, it sounds like a punctuation mark to me. So, I looked it up in the dictionary where I found that a nonpareil is ‘A person or thing that has no equal’. It is also a bird from the finch family also called a Painted Bunting. And it is both the teeny sugar balls and the final confectionary consisting of said balls atop the chocolate disc. It literally means – no equal.  Derived from the French and Latin words which make it up.

Still sounds like punctation to me. ‘Don’t forget your nonpareil in that sentence’….

At best a name which is a little high brow for a crunchy chocolate disc but there you go, I like Dazzle Drops better.

Anyhoo, want to make some?

20140214-104237.jpg
I got two bars of chocolate because chocolate seems to reduce in mass as it melts.  You will also need lots of hundreds and thousands.

For this batch I put the hundreds and thousands on the parchment and blobbed button sized rounds of melted chocolate onto them.   Best to let the chocolate cool a tiny bit for the blobbing stage, so that you get nice rounds and not random pools.

In hindsight I would do it the other way round, blob then sprinkle.  The way I did it, the chocolate almost devoured the little teeny sprinkles and only a few could be seen. Not so pretty but still yums.

Test a few to make sure they taste nice and then package them up all pretty and hand em over to your lovely Valentine!

6/52 Weekly photos and Living Arrows

This week’s colour for the colour photo challenge from Hula Seventy and Xanthe Berkeley is pink, so above is my pink collection.  Not much in the way of pink around, but I found a few things to snap.

I didn’t take a ton of photos this week, snow is only interesting for so long and the novelty has officially worn off!  I long for some little flowers to start peeking out and I want to plant veggies.

In the meantime, here are the photos from last week.  I have been doing a ‘Brush Script’ class online with Studio Calico and Kal Barteski and I have been practicing and practicing as you can see by the full floor!

We found a massive icicle hanging from the slide one morning on the way to school.

And we saw some pelicans visiting the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

20140210-192223.jpgThis photo is part of the Living Arrows project hosted by I Heart Snapping, a weekly photo of the children or something relating to them.  Mr.Y has his own arrow, made from ice in this photo!

I hope your week went well and this new week is also going great for you.

Six Word Saturday

20140208-155149.jpg
I am aware that it is February and still winter, but I keep seeing Instagrams of flowers and signs of Spring and I am feeling the need for some Springtime!
I know, I know, I will be complaining that I am too hot in about 6 months.
Got a Six Word Saturday? Share in the comments or pop it on Instagram.

Is it Spring yet? Here are some new bracelets.

20140208-093903.jpgI have listed these two bracelets in my Etsy shop today, I am happy with the photos and I love the bracelets!  These might be hard to part with, I mean how good they look together.  If you fancy a gander at my Etsy shop, click on either bracelet and you will travel by magic Etsy carpet over there!

20140208-093925.jpgThey are made with linen thread which holds together glass, lucite, shell and wood beads in an array of pinks then in a lovely array of blues.

I wanted to go for an early Spring/Summer look, short sleeves will mean time to show off those bracelets and these bracelets are versatile little beauties as they can also be worn as necklaces.  Hurrah!

20140208-093938.jpgPop over to my Etsy shop where new jewels will be arriving on a regular basis.  I am working on a necklace at the moment which uses similar blues to the bracelet here.  As soon as it is finished, I will share!

Happy weekend!  I will be back later with Six Word Saturday, when I think of it that is!

Through the Lens Thursday. Flower.

I know, ha ha, very funny. We have a few inches of snow and I have to find a flower for Through the Lens Thursday! Challenge accepted.

I found some snow topped hydrangeas which with some bending and twisting and kneeling in the snow, I could photo against the beautiful blue sky we have today.

I took a ton of photos, different numbers on different dials for different effects. In fact the first two I took, I just shot them straight off, I forgot to check my light meter and all other numbers.  Someone was going by and in my self conscious rush, I just started to snap away.  Well, thank you stranger who made me uncomfortable in my random photo taking because these are my favourite photos of the lot!

It is so exciting to get the photos onto the iPad to check them out properly. I always put my photos onto the iPad so that I can see them nice and big and check for focus or lack of it.  I get a vague idea from the teeny screen on my camera, I did see the first photos as very washed out and thought they were no good, but thankfully I didn’t erase them there and then.

I have such respect for anyone who took photos with film on a manual SLR camera before digital cameras came along.  No checking the screen on the back, no taking a million shots for a couple of decent ones, unless you wanted to use all of your film on one thing. And no pictures at all until they came back from the processors.  I took lots of photos using film and my point and shoot camera and loved waiting for the envelope of photos to come back.

When I was young, my Dad always used an SLR camera and took amazing photos which he never saw until he either processed then himself or got them back from the photo company in the mail. One memory from my childhood is the bath being full of photos propped up as they were drying! All great photos taken and processed by my Dad.

He always told me to take at least one photo of a subject, you never which may be successful and I still do that, always more than one shot of the same thing even on the phone.

I take a load of shots of the same thing,  especially as I learn manual and I always wonder if any will be any good.  At least I can have a look and check now. In the days of film, there was no option to check, just take the picture and trust your skills.

All I did to these photos is a little crop here and there.  I am really enjoying learning to use manual on my camera and I think I am starting to understand some of the numbers…

Pom pom Heart

I made a little pom pom heart for you.   Look!

20140205-190824.jpg
This would be a great little Valentine craft for kids, it takes a while, but not too long and they can mix in colours or make them a solid colour. I made my mini pom poms from a mix of pinks and reds. I was interested to see how the colours came through as to be honest, I have never mixed colours before, always used one colour per pom pom. I liked my little multi colour experiment and I am inspired to do more and trying to direct the colours where I want them instead of randomly like these.
Want to make a pom pom heart?
Make three pom poms, all the same size. I made pretty small ones (about two inches across), but you can make them any size you like.

20140205-191546.jpg

20140205-191555.jpg
Sew the pom poms together using the same wool, two on the top, one underneath, making a basic heart shape.
Leave one strand to hang with and trim the pom pom heart to get a better shape. Trim gently and gradually to get an even look, not a bad pom pom hair cut.
Make one for you and lots for your loves!

20140205-191855.jpg
I want to make lots now!  They would look great in a big clear glass vase or as a garland or all tied together to hang like an upside down bunch of flowers.  Hurrah for pom poms and making them into fab things like hearts.

Do you make Valentines?  Do your kids like to make cards for their class mates?  I still find it a bit strange that the kids in Elementary school here in the States give cards to the whole class.  I think the whole card giving thing passed me by until boys became interesting when I was a teenager.  Then of course there was the Valentine’s Day angst of no cards.

So, maybe it is best to give them to everyone…especially a lovely handmade card or a little something like a pom pom heart!
