100 Days of Creative Ideas 71-90

Blimey we are into the final ten days of the 100 day project which seemed so far away back in April when we started.

I don’t think I have repeated any ‘ideas’, but I might have done!  I don’t look back to see if I have made a copy.  Maybe I should!

Here are ideas 71 – 90.

71. Draw a cat with your eyes closed! No peeking.

72. Cut out a picture and stick it down. Draw a frame around it. Make a gallery!

73. Watch a flower grow, draw each stage.  This would be a cool sketchbook once it is full!

74. Look in the mirror. Draw your face without looking at the paper. Keep your eyes on your face and your pen on the paper.

75. Take a page from a book and cross out all the words except a few to make a new sentence.

76. Make a pattern which looks like part of a map. Start with a small shape and use different line thicknesses and closeness to make your own topography.

77. Cut a lemon in half and draw or paint it.

78. Find a picture of something you avoid drawing normally. Trace it in as much detail as you like.

79. Punch some holes into your page and decorate around them.

80. Use the cut out circles from 79 to form negative space by using them as a mask and paint over them.

81. Stick down the painted circles from 80 to make a pattern. Draw in or around the circles.

82. Draw your pet.

83. Paint water onto the page. Splatter ink over the wet shapes and marvel at the effects.

84. Draw lots of basic faces without eyebrows. Add eyebrows at all kinds of angles and see how the expressions change.

85. Invent a key. What does it open? How? What is inside?

86. Eat ice cream!  Invent a new flavor. What colour is it? Does it have extra ‘stuff’ in it?

87. Find a picture from an old yearbook. Give them a new description or use the original yearbook one. Imagine who they are.

88. Open a book, any book. Randomly pick out a sentence or two and draw or write something inspired by these sentences. Repeat as required.

89. Open a book again. This time randomly pick out some individual words (maybe close your eyes). Use these words to write a poem or as inspiration for a sketch or even a colour swatch.

90. Make a coloring page. Photocopy it and give it to your friends!

If you want to follow along with my project and see the individual cards as I make them, go to my Instagram page at Catseatdogsmakes.

2. Pizza rolls before looking a bit of a mess!

3. Pizza rolls cooked still looking a mess!!  Tasty though.

4. We found an ‘F’ which I think was an ‘E’ in a former life.

5. Funghi which looks like plates!

6. I pass this building every so often and it looks like it has no entrance or exit, no signs and no windows.  I wonder what it is/was. I am sure it has a door somewhere…..

Get Messy – Season of Colour Week 4.

Lots of colour play this week, using a few colours and using lots.  I learnt that I don’t love using yellow!

I painted on these vintage library catalogue cards using a very marvelous tutorial and idea from Julia via the Get Messy members blog.

What to do with the cards now?

I added two of them to a page I started in my Season of Colour journal (made from paper bags and atlas pages).  This page was a fighter, I almost painted ‘I hate this page’ all over it at one point (I am not even a little bit joking!).

But I persevered and after a slice of orange in my corner, I jumped back into the ring and finished the page.

I am so pleased that I didn’t scribble all over the page in a tantrum!

‘I Like’ Fridays. The travel art journal and supplies edition.

CapeCodArtJournal8

Before I went on holiday to Cape Cod I used the covers of an old book called ‘Cape Cod Folks’ to make myself a journal filled with watercolor paper, handmade blue paper, kraft paper and some pages from an old dictionary.

I am really enjoying using handmade journals because I get to choose the paper, the size of the pages and the overall size of the journal.  Full credit to the Get Messy Bookbinding class for teaching me all I know about making journals.  It really is a great class.  If you want a good book with clear instructions I recommend Esther K Smith’s book called How to Make Books. I have borrowed it many times from the library.

CapeCodArtJournal10

Once I was on vacation, it honestly took me a couple of days to get going in my art journal. It would have been easy to leave it in the drawer. I am so glad I didn’t.

The first spread I made was awful and again I could have left it in the drawer.  Then I casually sketched the whale on the wall of the cottage we were staying in thinking nothing of it.  But the magic was set, I doodled around him which made the page under him because some of the kraft paper was visible I wanted the pages to work together, so I continued to doodle over both pages.

From here on I stuck in stickers from places we had been, tickets and sketches of all kinds of things and of course some ‘messy’ colour pages.

CapeCodArtJournal7

I used my tiny homemade watercolor set  (follow the link to see how I made it) to paint our beach finds from the local beach on this watercolor paper spread. We went for a morning walk on the beach and gathered some bits and bobs which I then painted.

CapeCodArtJournal5

I included this fab photo of a very stern looking lady walking on the beach with her shoes over her shoulder.  I wonder where she is going and who she is with?  This was a photo from the shoe box full I bought from Wellfleet Flea Market.  The blue is from my brayer while I was making some gelli prints.

CapeCodArtJournal6

I took lots of photos of buildings to draw later and this house was one I managed to get down on paper.  I tore the photo of Frida out of the flight magazine (yes, I am that person!)

CapeCodArtJournal19

I played with gesso and watercolor to make this page on top of a seascape torn from a magazine.

CapeCodArtJournal18

The beach near where we stayed is covered in oyster shells and I gathered a few and drew these just using a white pen on the kraft paper page.  The opposite page is watercolor paper and on it I painted a pile of rocks using my sumi brush and black india ink.  Painting and drawing piles of flat rocks was one of my favorite things to do in this journal. It is very meditative making pile of flat rocks in different orders and sketching them.

CapeCodArtJournal17

CapeCodArtJournal16

Another building, this one was on a wildlife reserve.  The opposite page is a print out from the Chatham Marconi RCA museum.

CapeCodArtJournal15

I took my gelli plate with me (perfectly normal!!!) and these plants were the perfect subject to print with it.  One side is over a watercolor background and the other is another vintage photo from my flea market haul.

CapeCodArtJournal14

CapeCodArtJournal12

Following a lovely sunset I made this page with a pink sky!

CapeCodArtJournal11

CapeCodArtJournal9

I took lots of art supplies, it was not a compact and bijou art kit!  Heck, I even took a full sized gelli plate!  These are the supplies I used the most.

I bought the high flow acrylics while on holiday and used them lots, I also bought some regular acrylics which I left behind beause I didn’t have space to bring them back (this is where I am pleased that they were bargain craft acrylics).

I found lots of paper to use, mainly at the library where they had a free shelf which was full of all kinds of goodness.

Do you take lots of art supplies on holiday?  Do you use them all?  I really enjoyed filling my art journal and I am pleased I did, even if a page just has a sticker and a doodle, it was worth making it.

Happy Friday x

Get Messy Season of Colour

SeasonofcolourJournal3

You know when you have a fancy box of chocolates and you want to just dive in and try them all, but you know you need to use restraint and savor each one.  Well, this is how I am feeling this week in the Get Messy Season of Colour.  Firstly there are some great prompts which I want to try out, then I looked at the website last night and there are three new tutorials I have not looked at yet.

Yikes!

I want to quickly zip into each one and see what it is about, but I also want to allow myself the time to read and look at each one and of course have a go at the artistic wonders that lie within!

Before I take a run up and jump off the high board, here is my season of colour journal so far. I have taken a different approach this season, not deliberately, it just happened as do all good things in my art journals.

One evening on holiday, the boys all went out fishing and there I was, by myself with nothing to do.  Well, that didn’t last long, I gathered some brown paper bags (the ones you see in movies and think ‘how does anyone carry all of their groceries in those ridiculous brown paper bags with no handles’), some pages from the free atlas I picked up at the library and a brown bag with a handle for the cover pages.  I had bought some vintage thread at a church thrift shop so I used that to sew the book together and I made a pocket on the front to keep any work in progress or ephemera.

I don’t consider all of these pages finished, I started them all in fairly quick succession so I formed a theme pretty naturally.  Butterflies wanted to be included on all pages and I love the marbling so much I have lots of that, so it also is adorning many pages.

Most of the pages could use more, but I also like them all as they are, so I will see where my journal takes me this season.

As always I highly recommend the Get Messy community and if you want more information go to the website at www.getmessyartjournal.com.

The Circle Zine.

I have been zined!

Mail is the very best thing when it is not bills or junk, it is the very very best thing when it is a mini book full to the lid with art made just for you.

This is what the amazing Zine Squad do, they collaborate with each other and make a zine using their talents and generosity and it ends up with a lucky recipient, this time, it was me.  I was so excited to open my very own zine when it arrived in the mail, I had just got back from vacation and among the junk and adverts, this gem shone out at me!

My heartfelt thanks goes to Jules, Vanessa, Ashley and Katie for thinking of me and creating this wonderful artwork.

This mini art journal has zipped around the world and back again, gathering art and energy as it goes.  It almost shines with the joy bursting from it!

Love love love my zine!

2. Think big, start small, connect the dots.

3. I had a go at making marbled paper and this was some ink in the water all ready for the paper.

4. I spotted this recipe on the bottom of a Trader Joe’s bag and we had to make it!

5. Some marbled paper.

100 Days of Creative Ideas 51-70

IMG_2158

51. Gather some lovely beads and some thread or beading wire. Make yourself a pretty necklace.

52. Let’s design some borders. Put them along the bottom of a page. Make your own stationery or a pretty card.

53. Paint some blocks of colour onto sheets of paper.  Cut out random shapes from the painted paper. Stick the shapes onto a blank page to make a stunning collage.

54. Find patterns. In the course of your day, be on the look out for patterns. As I was sitting on the plane heading to our vacation I found some shapes to make into a pattern.

55. Sketch your day. Make small sketches of things you come across in your day. A flower in bud or a ticket to  flea market. Have fun!

56. Use a funky phone app to alter a photograph.

IMG_1441

For this photo, I put it into the Diptic app and turned the colour all the way down.  Play around, see what happens!

57. Stitch in your sketchbook. Find some cotton or embroidery thread and a nice thick needle. Either sketch a shape or go free-form and hand stitch on a page or two.

58. Make a pattern of rocks and draw it. Repeat and repeat!  You will soon have lots of rock arrangements. I picked up flat pebbles from the beach and piled them up in different ways for this exercise.

IMG_1830

59. Make bread. I used this basic white loaf recipe from “The River Cottage” .

IMG_1610

60. Sketch butterflies from your imagination or from a book. Use a water soluble marker to colour them. I used Tombow markers. Drip some water onto the butterflies and let them dry.  Draw lots of pretty watercolor-y butterflies!

61. Make a magazine collage garden. Cut out some flowers and grass shapes from random magazine pages. Glue them down and make a beautiful garden. Add details with pens and paint if you fancy.

62. Using an old plastic card, spread some acrylic colour onto your page. Mix it or keep the colours separate. Use the page as a background for a collage or a sketch or leave it as it is.

63. Paint a vase of flowers.

64. Write or sketch a quote.

65. Make a sketch and use some stamps for the details. I drew some shelves and filled them with stamped objects.

66. Grab a good pen, one you like, or a pencil and draw a ‘scribble tree’. Leave your pen/pencil on the page at all times and scribble draw a tree. Give it leaves or flowers, maybe a bird nest!

67. Cut out a lovely face from a magazine and cut the hair off. Stick the face down and draw her a lovely flowery hair-do!

68. Get an old book from the thrift store or library sale. Rip out a page ad draw on it. Make doodles, a pattern or a sketch. Book pages make a lovely background.

69. Paint a planet. Start with a wet circle of white watercolor paint and drop black ink and blue ink into the circle. Sprinkle salt over the whole ‘moon’. Let it dry completely and  brush off the salt.

70. Draw a cactus or two, or three.

Follow my process with the 100 day project over at Instagram at catseatdogsmakes.  Are you doing the project?  I hope it is going well, we are almost three quarters of the way through!

Red river beach also has the whitest sand I have seen on Cape Cod.  It is a lovely beach.

IMG_2051

One of my favorite places we visited while on holiday on Cape Cod was Edward Gorey House in Yarmouthport. It is an amazing place to visit with so much to see.

IMG_2043

IMG_2038

A couple of pictures from inside the Edward Gorey House, above the photo on the windowsill, it says “What is your favorite journey?” to which Gorey replies “Looking out a window.” Perfect.

We had a lovely holiday on Cape Cod and now we are home, in the oven like temperatures of St Louis!
