Packing Tape Image Transfer Ideas.

Packing Tape Image Transfer
I was browsing Creative Bug this week and came across the ‘Image Transfer’ class which to be honest I would have skipped, but my youngest wanted to have a look. So we watched the intro and the first lesson which was packing tape image transfer. We had tape and we had images in magazines and old books, so we thought we would give it a go and it looked pretty straightforward.

We found that book images worked best, black and white were especially effective. We didn’t use photocopies, but I would imagine that they would work well too.
The key is to find a picture or part of a picture which will fit within the parameters of the tape. No good picking a big image with you can only partly use, if you want the whole thing. Pick out the best part of the picture and place your tape over that.

Once the tape is firmly pressed down with no air bubbles (I used a ruler to rub the tape onto the paper), tear or cut around the taped image and soak it in warm water for a few minutes. We found that some paper comes off easily with a gentle rub to remove the paper pulp from the tape and some needs a few more minutes.  Don’t rub too hard and try not to crease or fold the tape.Packing tape image transfer

The next thing to decide is what to do with the lovely transfers you have just made.  Some of them are still quite sticky on the back once they dry, so they can almost be used as stickers.  I put this tiger into the diary as a record of our activity, he sticks by himself and I like that you can see through the clear part of the image to the diary page.

These black and white images came from a children’s book which I bought from the library’s sale rack for 25c.  They were somewhat sticky, and I used some pretty washi tape to stick them onto the postcard.  I also added some hand lettering and doodles.

The whole process is well worth it and you can do some lovely projects with the images once they are on the tape.  You could –

1. Cut out the image and make a sticker.

2. Make cards with them.

3. Use them in an art journal or a regular journal.

4. Make them with kids and keep them entertained for an hour or two.

5. Stick them down and make them the base for a whole new drawing/painting.

6. Sew them onto a card.

7. Make a bookmark with them.

I followed the instructions at Creative Bug, but I also found a good tutorial at A Beautiful Mess.  I am sure Pinterest is awash with tutorials and ideas for this method too.

We used pictures from old National Geographics from charity shops and used children’s books from the library sale shelf.

Have you done image transfer?  What did you use your images for?

Six Word Saturday

Six Word Saturday
I made some ‘no knead’ bread this morning after it had been rising all night, had a slice with Marmite and did a bit of jigsaw puzzle.
Our library lends jigsaw puzzles now which is a good thing, except I think we might have done them all by the end of the week! Don’t you love a puzzle? They remind me of my Grandma who always had one on the go and usually with a bazillion pieces.

Through The Lens Thursday #27. Fruit.

Strawberries
Strawberries! I ate these little treasures after I had photo’ed them, so, it is a good job I liked the picture.
For next week’s Through the Lens Thursday the prompt is ‘Dress’.

Happy Thursday!

Why can’t I part with this? Or this or this?

Clothes

I am trying to have a clear out and I keep reading about how people are doing it so well, I mean look at Annette from I Give you the Verbs and Tracie at Beets and Birch. Bish bash bosh, cleared out and tidy wardrobe, no 1980’s outfits lurking in these ladies closets.
So, why is it then that when I charge at my clothes with a hard head and a trash bag do I manage to pull out a single scraggy t shirt which is in no state to even send to charity. How do people fill bags? It isn’t like my wardrobe is minimal, I need to get rid of stuff and there is plenty of stuff in there which firmly falls into the ‘haven’t worn in 2 years’ or ‘doesn’t fit’ or ‘I don’t really like it anymore’ categories.

Here are the holdback areas I need to address-
1. I might like it again (yeah, when the 90’s are cool again and I am 60 years old)
2. It might fit again (ahem who am I kidding)
3. It is good quality and I didn’t wear it much. (and….)
4. Memories, it has memories attached. (take a photo and move on)
5. It is a designer piece. (I mean Matthew Williamson for H&M or Jean Paul Gaultier for Target)

So here are two examples of items (pictured above) I can’t/won’t get rid of and the whys.

I bought the Patrick Cox Wannabe loafers in the 90’s when they were a big deal and I was so happy to be owning a pair like one of the cool kids. I am pretty sure I got them on sale but they were still very expensive for just finished college me. I was so excited to own a pair of Patrick Cox shoes,  I was heading to New York City for a few days and these cool babies were coming with me. Distressed Levi’s and these shoes were going to be my look. I am not sure whether I wore them before the trip very much or not, but these shoes were the most uncomfortable things I have ever worn in my life. Ever. They never got better, no wearing in or getting more comfortable, these shoes are solid, not an ounce of stretch or sensible shoe in sight.
First day in New York and I was hobbling about like an old lady (in damn cool shoes)! I still kept them and I still wore them, band aids in my purse at the ready!
So, I still keep them and I don’t even consider getting rid of them, they have memories (mainly of painful blisters) and they are designer (really) and they were a 90’s fashion icon!

The red Levi’s were my Mum’s and I snaffled them as soon as I was allowed. I did borrow them whenever I could when I was a kid, but I always wanted those jeans as my own. As my Mum rocked these beauties, I was in a pair of dungarees which was my first denim at about age 10 or 11. I think she gave them to me while I was at college and I wore them for a 70’s fancy dress party although they are so universal, they looked modern and still do. I would totally wear them now if I could fit my butt into them!
I remember my Mum getting these jeans along with a striped sweatshirt which was also cool, but I didn’t steal! It was a killer outfit in the late 70’s, maybe even very early 80’s.
Another item I am keeping.

Having said all that, there are other items which I think have the magical hold over me that these two pieces do, but I need to toughen up and grab a big trash bag or three.

Are you good at clearing out? Or do you hesitate and then keep every darn thing?

Barred Owl
Vintage tray
Exploring
Mandala
1. I had a little chat with the local owl this week as he sat on a branch and looked at me over his back. I love that owls can turn their head all the round to face the other way!
2. This tray was in a antique mall and I like the buildings on it and the style in which they are drawn. I didn’t buy the tray, but snapped a photo, so maybe I can get inspiration from it to draw my own cute buildings.
3. The creek has flooded up and down so much lately we haven’t been exploring for a while, but we went for a paddle this weekend and said ‘Hi’ to Mrs Duck and her ducklings as they swam and waddled by us.
4. A mandala and the mess I make when I am drawing and painting them!

I hope you had a good week, the weather here had been a bit bonkers, storms and sun and heat and hail! Hopefully this next week will be more settled.

We have been swimming at the local YMCA almost every day so far and I got a new swim suit today, so I hope it works. My old one was getting very faded and saggy – lovely! Swimwear is my very least favourite form of clothing, but if you want to swim, got to wear the suit. You never know, I might love my new swim shorts and top!

Do you get dragged swimming by the kids in the summer? I am not a sun worshipper, so I am happy to be inside at a pool rather than frying at an outdoor pool. It gets hot here, so I am happy to jump into a cool pool and have a swim about.

Oh, I just stopped writing to do a few stitches of crochet! I am very easily distracted…….

See you next time, Happy Monday!

Six Word Saturday

Six Word Saturday
We went for a walk in the creek this afternoon and we found the usual marble and the more unusual find – a Buzz Lightyear laser gun!
It is funny that we almost always find marbles down there, someone years ago must have played lots of marbles and lost them into the creek bed.
Toys from across the decades meet for the first time!

Through the Lens Thursday 26, Seasoned. And How the 100 Day Project is going for me.

TTLT 26 Seasoned

This week’s prompt for Through the Lens Thursday is ‘Seasoned’.  Should I photo a seasoned dish (I am no food photographer, so no!)? How about some seasoning?  Maybe some herbs from the garden?  Or how about a photo about being a seasoned person?

Seasoned the noun rather than the verb, I want to be a seasoned artist, I don’t want to be seasoned with salt and spices!  A seasoned parent is the route Greta at Gfunkified and one of the inventors of TTLT took.  Her lovely picture of her children is testament to her skills as a seasoned mother.

This led me to thinking about the 80 days I have been involved in The 100 Day Project and whether I am becoming a seasoned mandala artist or a seasoned follower of challenges thrown out there in media land?  Probably neither, but I have been really enjoying the project and the amazing work being produced by the many many 100 day project participants.  I have stuck to it and made a new mandala every day, some take ages and ages and some are a photo of a natural or found mandala.  I have posted them all on Instagram under the hashtag #100daysofmakingmandalas and I am very proud of my nearly filled sketchbook.  So many ideas have come to me through my daily mandalas and I have learnt so many techniques while drawing and painting them.

I still have ideas running out of my head to make more mandalas and different techniques to learn for all kinds of projects.  I want to paint more and learn about watercolour painting and I want to learn to draw properly too, so I have a couple of future projects in my pocket already.  My kids are off school until August, so I am hoping that they will join in with some art project as we work together on a messy dining table!

Yay for projects!  What are you up to?  Do tell.

Chicken of the woods
Tiny people
Musk Thistle
Monster Mash-Up
Playing
Almost half way through the year and for some reason it doesn’t feel like it is whizzing by which makes a nice change.

We are fully submerged in summer until August and always thinking of things to do which is not always easy now the kids are getting older. No-one wants to pop to the park anymore with nothing but each other and a bag of Goldfish for entertainment.
Highlights of our summer to come are likely to be the ‘Minions‘ movie and going to see the polar bears in their new enclosure at the zoo.  It gets super duper hot and humid here, so we have to be out and about in the mornings before the sun becomes too melting.

Some photos from the past week.

1. Following a week of constant rain some mushrooms have popped up in the woods, this Chicken of the Woods is a spectacular one and edible.  Would you eat it?

2. Teeny figures I found thrift shopping on Cape Cod, the fella with the long nose can also retract his nose.  Tip him back and nose in, tip him forward and nose out!

3. A lovely thistle we spotted while out last week.  I also drew this as part of my 100 mandalas for The 100 Day Project. #100daysofmakingmandalas

4. Our library had a ‘craft’ afternoon on Saturday where we got to rip toys apart then ‘mash’ them back together.  I think the adults had the most fun!!

5. Hanging with GI Joe.

Six Word Saturday

Six Word Saturday
This afternoon we went to the local library to make new action heroes (and anti heroes as it turned out!) from old figures.
After years of telling my kids not to ruin their toys, here we were ripping heads and arms off to our hearts content.
Lots of new creatures were created and a ton of fun was had!
If you have a Six Word Saturday, feel free to share in comments or on Instagram, tagging me @girlfifteen, so I can see.

Have a fab weekend!
