Lovely day for a wander in the woods. Apparently this toad had the same idea!
Happy weekend and holiday Monday.

Through The Lens Thursday 21. Negative Space.

I really like photos with lots of deliberate negative space. One of the Through the Lens Thursday hosts, Greta at Gfunkified, has some fab examples for this week’s prompt.
This tree is part of the Japanese garden at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, reaching into the sky.
I took the photo with my Canon 6D and edited in Snapseed.
Happy Thursday!
Practise practise practise.
Practice or practise? Just as I figure out the difference, I read that practice can be used for the verb and the noun here in the States. I think I will play my British card here and still use the different spellings or the next thing I know I will be calling yams – sweet potatoes and tortoises -turtles. Language is a funny thing isn’t it, how it gets changed even when we are speaking the ‘same’ language.
Anyway, I was thinking about practising some drawing and how much I should practise and how long for and then the question which holds me back more than any popped up – Why?
I have a strange relationship with practising something, anything. I am happy to do it, but look at it as a waste of time, maybe not so much a waste but I unconsciously limit the amount of time I allow myself to draw or crochet or learn Photoshop (the last one is on my to do list…).
It took me literally two years to learn to crochet something (granny squares is where I am now at). I don’t think this is because I am totally useless at crocheting, I just wouldn’t let myself have a go and more importantly give myself the time and permission to get it all wrong, then start again.
What eventually focused me and rendered me successful was booking time with my friend’s Mum who sat me down and very patiently taught me, beginning with how to hold the hook and yarn (turns out to be pretty much the most important part). Once I was a captive student for an hour or two, I came away a happy crocheting camper. It also boosted my confidence when I spent a couple of weeks thinking I was beginning a blanket and realizing I was actually failing horribly at said blanket, but I had the basic skills to try something else. I once again gave myself the time to go to Creative Bug with my new skills and I followed the granny square videos and I haven’t looked back. Ok, I can only make granny squares, but I can also learn other stitches and go forward with another project (maybe different colored squares…..).
So now I want to do some drawing, actual drawing, not doodling which is what I do at the minute and I love it, but I want to be able to draw things instead of just shapes and squiggles. This realisation came up as part of my 100 days of making mandalas project. As I approach mandala number 50, I am liking the designs where I use actual drawings of things like buildings or fish or flowers or cakes the best. The problem here is that I can only draw very stylised things. I wanted to add a rooster to my barn mandala yesterday and had no clue how to draw the darn bird. Did I practice drawing a rooster? Nope, I just did suns instead, circles and triangles are so much easier.
This got me thinking that I need to get some drawing practise completed if I want to get better and not just keep doing the same old same old.
So how can I get myself to practice?
1 Go to the library and stash myself away in one of the reading nooks with my sketchbook.
2. Follow a book like ‘One Drawing a Day’.
3. Make myself a challenge to draw something everyday for a month.
4. Get a pretty sketchbook and fill it with drawings.
5. Reward myself when I get to milestones – 10 drawings, 25 drawings, filling a sketchbook.
6. Get together with a group to draw.
7. Ask the art teacher at school if I can draw in the art room when there are no kids.
8. Sit in the park and draw, take a coffee and a book to read for breaks.
9. Allot myself a time to draw every day or every other day – 10 mins, 30 mins, a weekly hour or two.
10. Concentrate on one subject and only draw that for an hour/10 mins/two hours.
11. Give myself a project like decorating a journal cover or designing some writing paper or cards.
12. Enlist the kids in a drawing half hour, all sit with sketchbooks and tell each other what to draw.
13. Connect with someone with similar interests (online or in real life) and set goals to be accountable for – I am game if you are!
14. Allow myself to read books about drawing/painting for inspiration.
‘Allow’, that is the word isn’t it, allow myself to take the time. I allow myself to waste 10 minutes on Facebook, why not 10 minutes drawing? Because it is harder and I might mess it up, I might not think of what to draw and what am I drawing for anyway? Isn’t there washing-up to do and floors to clean?
I am going to allow myself to practise drawing, hopefully every day. I will let you know how it goes. Is there anything you need to allow yourself to practise regularly? Let’s do it!

1. We had a 14th birthday this week, yikes a proper teenager in the house now! I made a Strawberry Shortcake Ice cream cake for the occasion.
2. Some of my lavender is catching up with some growing, but this end of the lavender bed is doing so well, I can’t wait to harvest some this year for lavender bags.
3. We went to the Missouri Botanical Gardens this weekend and saw some more lanterns, I love these dandelion clocks (I am not sure that is what they are supposed to be, but that is what they look like to me!). They were super sparkly in the sunshine.
4. While at the gardens we went to visit the koi carp in the Japanese garden where you can buy 25 cents worth of food to throw in. Some of them are giants and look at those mouths all ready for food!
I am joining with Meet Me at Mikes for this week’s One+Four=Life post, pop over there to see more snapshots of weeks around the world.
Six Word Saturday

There was a garage sale at a local church this morning, so off we went at 7am (yawn).
My youngest found some very fabulous cine and regular vintage cameras from around the 1940’s. I wonder if they would still work and if you can get film for them?
I picked up a 1930’s ‘Lavender Bath Powder’ tin and some lovely grey pearl buttons for a couple of dollars.
It has rained lots here today, but it is still warm so the plants are all growing nicely.
I hope you have had a marvellous Saturday and are looking forward to Sunday.
Through The Lens Thursday #20. Round.
I didn’t realize how many round things are in my ‘I like this’ department. I like my wood rings from Philomena and Ruth, my silver rings made by Kate McKinnon, the two charms on leather which I made yesterday and the string of beads which I will most likely fashion into a bracelet for the summer. Lots of things to like.
I find that I tend to wear the same things for a while, then move onto something else. At the minute I am definitely into my wood rings and I love a casual leather cord with something gorgeous on it, simply tied at the back.
What is your ‘go to’ wearable at the minute? A favorite scarf or shoes, rings or lipstick! I am trying to be a big girl and wear lipstick and make up more. When I say lipstick, I mean tinted lip balm, baby steps.
Happy Thursday!
Through the Lens Thursday details are here and next week is ‘negative space’ which I assume doesn’t mean the naughty corner….!
How my Garden is Growing.
I thought I would share my little garden today, everything has just started to grow really well. It is all green green green with a extra touch of green.
The sunflowers are growing fast, followed by the tomatoes and rocket. The kale and chili plants are coming along nicely, chilies always seem to grow so slowly, I am happy I have any leaves at all!
My lavender bed didn’t all survive the freezing St Louis winter, but I have a couple of tough plants and I have put some more in the bed to fill it up again. Hopefully I will get a bumper harvest again this year and make some lavender bags and maybe some lavender infused oil to use in balms and perfumes. Then it’s fingers crossed for the winter months.
The rhubarb is looking good, but I think I need to leave it this year and wait to harvest next year. Seems a little too long to wait for rhubarb crumble, maybe I will buy some this year and let my little plants get big and strong!
Do you have a garden or pots or both like me? What do you like to grow? I need to plant some more herbs, I only have basil, mint and coriander, and I think I am in need of parsley.

I can’t wait to see how my garden grows through the summer and I will be sure to enjoy all the leaves and fruits as they grow.
I think I have enough to share with the local wildlife, as long as the squirrels, bunnies and woodchucks are not too greedy, we shall all get along just fine!
I hope your garden is doing well whatever you are growing!

For this week’s four photos, it was a hard choice and it made a nice change to have choice! Don’t you find that a week will pass and you have taken hardly any photos, yet another week, you have been a clicking demon and have no end of snaps to choose from!
I have had a week of field trips, on Tuesday I went to southern Illinois to Waterloo and my friend’s new shop Philomela and Ruth. On Wednesday I went out with some friends to the Missouri Botanical Gardens and saw the blooming irises which were all amazing. They were also setting up the Lantern Festival ready for the event to start at the end of May. I think the lantern display is as impressive during the day as it would be all lit up at night. So much work goes into it all, we will be visiting again once all the lanterns are up and running later this month.

2. One of a gaggle of birds at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, part of the lantern festival.
3. An Iris in the crowd at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.
4. Columbines in my neighbor’s garden, taken with the Hipstamatic app which I haven’t used in ages.
I wish you a fun week ahead! Pop over to Meet Me at Mikes to see more One+Four=Life posts.
Six Word Saturday

It is serious growing weather here at the minute, rain and warm, I am virtually watching my seedlings grow before my eyes. The arugula/rocket is going bananas which means I will be eating a nice salad with every meal!
As I walked to Barre class this morning I stopped to snap the blanket of flowers on the green bridge.
Happy Saturday and Happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow to all you Mums!
Taking Stock, May
Time to follow the fine example of Pip at Meet me at Mikes and Take Stock I think, so let’s see what I am up to today.

Smelling: The lilac bushes and honeysuckle as I walk through the woods on the way to school.
Wearing: Top, leggings and wellies, ready for a wet walk.
Following: My 10 year old as he zooms ahead on his skateboard, then stops to show me a few tricks. Love it.
Noticing: How kids can speed along on a small board with wheels without a care in the world.
Knowing: I would most likely break something if I tried to skateboard!
Thinking: About new perfumes and sprays to make.
Admiring: My friend who is about to open a ‘Spalon’ – hair salon and spa all in one.
Sorting: Out some beads to make myself a lovely bracelet or two and maybe a necklace too.
Getting: Out all the summer clothes and shoes.

Coveting: New summer dresses.
Disliking: The speed that the day whizzes by.
Opening: Bags of soil to plant seeds and plants and flowers in pots.
Giggling: At the honeysuckle flower which was on my trousers this morning and I thought a bird had dropped a present on me!
Feeling: Like I should stop drinking this cold tea…
