Through The Lens Thursday 33. Lemon.

TTLT 33 Lemon

I had to go and check the list of prompts for this week’s Through the Lens Thursday photo.  Lemon?  Are you sure?  Lemon?  An actual lemon?  The colour lemon?  A lemon recipe? Feeling like a lemon?

Yes, I am sure,  and all of the above will do just fine.

I decided to dig out a few lemon recipes from my 1970’s Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library and use an actual real life lemon.

Lemon and dappled sunlight, what a lovely combination.

Happy Thursday!

Car-less or One Car Less? Life with Fewer Wheels.

image

When I was a kid, in the 1970s and a teen in the 1980s, our family had one car and so did everyone else.  I don’t think I knew any family with two cars, unless they were proper fancy.   If Mum needed the car one day, she would drive Dad to work and collect him after, so we had the car to zip around in all day.  Usually, we would catch the bus into town or walk to the village and all help carry bags home.

One of the first things I noticed when we moved to the United States 11 years ago was the overhead wires and cables, everywhere, wires in the sky across the garden and the roads, making the clouds ugly.  The other thing I noticed was the amount and size of cars people own and drive.  Every house seems to have a massive people carrier the likes of which were only used in the UK for trips involving a group of people and often a camping trip.  Filling a car here seems to be a terrible idea, four people in a 4-5 seater – never!  Two to four people clearly need a seven seater to fill with car seats and Goldfish crackers and toys and DVDs and anything to distract from what might be going on outside the windows.

On the other hand it is almost dangerous to own a small car like a Mini or a Smart car, they are so tiny compared to the rest of the vehicles on the roads.

So, how about less cars per drive?

How about one car less, not car-less, just a car less?  One car, per house?

Where I live, a car is considered a necessity if not an extra body part.  I don’t have one (car, not an extra body part) and I have no drivers license, I can operate a car, but don’t.

I have carried on like this for the past 11 years and I consider myself to be getting on and around just fine.  Our family has a car, just one, which my husband drives.

Lately a friend of mine has decided to go down to one car for her family and they are doing fine, now her family is thinking of going car-less.  No car.   At all.

There are taxis and rentals,  buses and trains, although of course these can’t get you everywhere.  Or can they?  Maybe I am not trying hard enough.

This got me thinking about whether the ‘no car’ thing is a good idea or not?  Forgetting for a minute,  that this is pretty much how I live my life.

So I ponder, what are the pros and cons of no/hardly any car?

Well, on the plus side,  it must be cheaper, we have only ever owned one car, so I have no benchmark, but heck it must be a money saver.

Your family’s carbon footprint will be self righteously lower (remember kids, recycle and compost too).

Walking is healthier, than sitting.

You see a whole lot more of the seasons and the life in them.  People, dogs, butterflies, birds…….possums…and one of my favourites, mushrooms!

Shopping at Target and carrying it all home is a full body work out, depending on what you buy, but who ever goes to Target and comes home with only the shampoo they went for?  No-one, that’s who.

You will be spotted and greeted everywhere you go and people are always fascinated that you walk.  Get to know your neighbourhood, walk and meet the people and the dogs.

Carrying a bag full of library books is also a great workout.

You become a weather enthusiast.   Will it rain before I leave for school or will I get soaked to the skin and possibly struck down by lightning?  All important stuff to know.

You do get to know your area and how to get out and about to other places, the kids also learn where things are and how to get there.  It can be fun, take your camera!

On the other side of the four wheeled coin, what is not so great?  Well I am glad you asked –

Extreme weather is a jolly inconvenience.  Slip sliding on ice to school is not a fun time, nor is sweating to the swimming pool then sweating back home and trying to hang onto the memory of cool water as it sweats out of your brow and into your eyes.

Dirty summer flip flop walking feet are gross and one of the reasons I don’t frequent nail salons.

There is much less opportunity to wear pretty shoes, remember you will be walking to and from that party/book club/glass of wine at your friend’s house.

Shopping at Target and carrying it all home makes you a sweaty mess in the summer, whether you only bought that shampoo or a basket full and we all know you are never going to just buy shampoo.

You can only buy what will fit in your basket – no carts, remember you have to carry this little lot home.

A simple trip out can involve a spot of planning, is there a bus?  Train?  Just how far is a reasonable walk?

You become weirdly weather obsessed – will it rain on the way to the train?  Is it too hot to walk to the shops and not melt in a sweaty puddle part way there?  Will I freeze solid on the way to the gym (no walking is not my workout).

Food shopping for more than a meal or two is a complete nightmare, or maybe I just need to push the whole cart home, and just keep it for next time, after all there is room on the drive!  Yes, food shopping needs a car in my opinion.

What do you think?  Could you do without your car?   Do you even have a car?  How is the walking situation/public transit where you are?

Last week we enjoyed the cooler weather, could Autumn be on the way?!  I spotted a bright door, we played dominoes, the sunflower is so yellow it almost glows in the dark and we found lost treasures in the creek.  I wonder who this watch belonged to?

I hope you had a good week and that you are looking forward to the week ahead.  We are back to school this week, so we are having a love/hate relationship with that as we gather notebooks and pencils together and remember locker combinations.

Through The Lens Thursday 32. Love.

Through the Lens #32

I was wondering what to photo for this week’s prompt, ‘Love’ is a pretty open one don’t you think?  I really had no idea when I got up this morning with the rain pouring down outside,  what I would photo.

I peeked out the back door to see how the garden was looking and to check on the tomatoes, making sure that the local wildlife hasn’t had more than it’s fair share.  Groundhogs and squirrels I am looking at you.

As I was looking into the lovely watering rain, I noticed this little puddle at the bottom of the steps.  The ground has been de-grassed from a summer of slip n sliding and this area always forms a mini pond in the rain.  Today the water had soaked into the ground just enough to leave me a heart shaped puddle.  How totally cool is this!  I grabbed my camera and here we are – Love in the rain.

‘Through the Lens Thursday’ is a photo improvement project which runs all year, hosted by Writing Wishing and Gfunkified blogs.

A Day Out at Delmar Loop and Rocket Fizz

Throughout the summer break we have been out and about in the local area and this week was no exception.  It is sometimes a challenge to find something that both boys want to do now they are 9 and 13 years old, but a trip to the Delmar Loop including Rocket Fizz was something everyone agreed on.

We caught the Metro Link train over there in the morning to try and beat the heat a little.  This didn’t work as the humidity was already making the air thick and hot, but we had a candy and soda shop to visit, so no-one cared about being too hot (okay, I might have moaned a little bit).

On the way along the Loop we passed a few cool signs, so I had to take a couple of snaps!  I love the peacock sign and the man soaring into the sky in his fancy tuxedo was a must!

Delmar Loop

We headed into Rocket Fizz and I for one was happy for a spot of air conditioning!  It was ‘Taste Test Tuesday’ when we were there which meant that the boys could try ten different sodas and, keep a bottle of one of them and keep the plastic shot glass they used to ‘taste’ with all for $5.00.  The testing was a fun few minutes and each soda was introduced by the staff member who was dishing them out.

Rocket Fizz, Delmar Loop, STL

Yes, I know, that is Iron Bru in the middle of the soda shelves!  I used to love Iron Bru when I lived in the UK.  Rocket Fizz has lots of US candy and soda of course, but they also stock candy from the UK and Japan.  I spotted Galaxy, Dairy Milk and Smarties as well as Hello Kitty seaweed!

Soda flavours range from Lemonade to Strawberry via Chocolate, Gingerbread and Bacon flavours.  I am not sure I like the idea of bacon soda to be honest.  Here is a down to earth energy drink in the form of Popeyes Energy drink, shame there was no spinach flavour….

Rocket Fizz

As well as all of the packaged candy Rocket Fizz has a Saltwater Taffy wall and it runs right down the length of the shop!  Fill a bag, and they want you to FILL that bag for $5.99 or $7.99 depending on the bag size.  We got sent back to the Taffy wall to put more in our bag!!

We will be jumping on the train again in the near future I am sure to pay another visit to Rocket Fizz!

One of my favourite type of shops is art supply shops, so while we were on the Loop, we nipped across the road to Dick Blick art shop so I could get a new Sumi brush, some paint and a lovely new sketchbook.  I like these Magma sketchbooks with three bookmarks and numbered pages, there is even a calendar on the first pages.  Handy!  There is even a Magma ‘fashion’ sketchbook which has silhouettes on various (not all) pages.  I might get one next time I am at Dick Blicks, might be handy for jewelry sketches.  I am a little bit obsessed with sketchbooks, I really do love them!

Everyone was happy after a noodle lunch and off we went home chewing on Taffy in random flavours no-one could remember what they were!

I hope you are having a lovely week.

The August Break 2014

I am joining in with Susannah Conway’s August Break this year and taking daily shots following her prompts and tips.  I must say that I am enjoying the e mails she sends out every day immensely, some are photos and tips from Susannah and some are guest tipsters like the wonderful Xanthe Berkeley.  Lots of ideas, inspiration and creativity going on!

So, for the month of August, I will be sharing the week’s ‘Break’ photos on a Monday.  I am keeping my phone or camera handy and my eyes open this month hoping to get some great end of summer pics!

Here are days 1 – 3.

Happy week to you!

Photo a Day July 2014

As we embark on the month of August, there seems to be a plethora of photo a day challenges.  They are around every corner.  Which to choose?  I have been doing the Fat Mum Slim challenge for a couple of years now and I really enjoy that it makes you keep a daily photo record to look back on, so I will be carrying on with this one.

There are some new ones which have popped up for August only.  Jess at Create and Thrive has made one called ‘A month in the Life’ which appeals to me because it is a specific ‘work’ challenge and the prompts are all relevant to what you do, where, how and why.

Bon Bon Break have one too called ‘Get Outside’,  again with relevant prompts and Instagram based.   This is a good one because they encourage you to like other people’s pictures and comment which is always nice to do.

The August challenge I decided to take on is Susannah Conway’s August Break which is intended to give bloggers a break from the blog and allow them just to post photos for August.  I am not going to only post the photos, I will carry on posting,  but my weekly round up on a Monday will be the challenge photos.  I will share them on Instagram too.

Do you participate in any photo a day challenges?  Will you be joining one for August?  Let me know so I can come and see your photos.

In the meantime, here are my July Photo a Day pics.

Through The Lens Thursday 31. Looking Up.

Looking Up

This week’s prompt for Through The Lens Thursday is ‘Looking Up’, so I did.  We went on a little hike yesterday with some friends and these pylons were marching across the landscape.   I looked up and caught the harsh lines of the pylon and wires against the drifting clouds of the afternoon.

Do you always remember to look up as well as all around to get a photograph or just take in your surroundings?  It’s a good thing to do.
