Another barmy week of St Louis weather!  Temperatures ranging from the high 70’s at the weekend to a snow day on Wednesday. We have settled in the 50’s and 60’s for the time being, but who can tell! This final week of February has seen the last of the Tinkersketch prompts (I am writing a post this week about this challenge) and the end of my month of drawing houses.  I seem to be jumping onto the monthly challenges this year and March sees the beginning of another sketch a day challenge hosted by Creative Bug and presented by Pam Garrison. Sketchbook at the ready! 1. Ice cream in the warm weather, with the essential hundreds and thousands. 2. We woke up to a snow day on Wednesday. 3. I made some lemon and lime lip balms, they smell so fresh and lovely! 4 and 5. I couldn’t resist buying a fabulous romanesco which we ate dipped in ranch and the rest was added to a stir fry. All after I snapped some photos! I …

It has been a week of weather and appointments.  The kids were off on Monday for President’s Day, then one had a sick day on Tuesday. I had an ultrasound appointment on Wednesday which is always nerve wracking, but it went fine and all clear.  Then on Thursday the youngest had his yearly check up at the pediatricians. Phew! By Friday we were happy to have the school field trip to the Missouri Botanical Gardens to look forward to.  It was a glorious day, warm and sunny and the gardens were a-buzz with staff working on the flower beds and general maintenance. Of course the outdoor plants are not blooming yet, but we had the privilege of seeing the orchid show which was stunning.  After that, we had a tour with a lovely guide around the indoor climatron.  The kids were great and we had a super time! The weekend was a boiler (for February) as temperatures leapt up to 78 degrees.  T shirts were out! Photos – 1. I worked on my art journal …

I feel like I have done nothing so far this week except walk to the shops and the dentist.  Oh wait, that’s because that is pretty  much what I have done!  Why is there always something you need for dinner which the cupboard does not contain, off to ‘Trader Joes’ I go. I went to the dentist this morning in the whirling snow to get a crown put on, well the temporary, I have another appointment to put the real thing on, yay. It has been swirling snow all day but none of it has stayed on the ground. This first photo is a lovely sunset earlier this week which I snapped while we were out metal detecting.  No treasure this week I am afraid.  Still looking for the chest! Over the weekend the skateboards were pulled out and my youngest was zipping about on his wheels, I spotted this circle of lichen on a tree.  Pretty cool. Shadows at the end of the day in hazy sun are the best. Yesterday’s Tinkersketch was ‘repetition’ …

I am happy to see February, not that January was bad, it was a perfectly good month, but for some reason February feels like my new year.  January was a kind of warm up and a successful one, now we are second month in, I feel like I am more on course.  Better plans and more importantly, ideas to complete said plans.  Hurrah for February. This past week has been a fun one, we have had some sunshine and warm days. I decided to have a go at making some postcards to send out to people.  To make some cards I used photos I have taken, like this one of the flamingos at the zoo with some text popped on.  Some I just used a plain background with text.  All done in apps like Phonto and Little Moments. I like these apps because you are not restricted to working in a square.  Fun! At the salon! This glamorous shot was taken in the Hipstamatic app. I picked up a box of vintage math cards and …

Red!  Last week I found lots of red things to take snaps of as I joined Xanthe Berkeley and Hula Seventy in the yearly color/colour lovers challenge. So here are some Target carts all in a line.  My 11 year old may or may not have been standing next to me cringing as his Mum photo’ed shopping trolleys! It snowed mid week and we had a snow day on Wednesday, these sweet gumballs got little snow hats. My gooseberry bush is leaveless, but looking good against the snow and showing off it’s thorns.  I think I need to prune it in the spring and hopefully we will get a nice goosegog crop this year. Over half way through the Creative Bug Draw a Day challenge hosted by Lisa Congdon.  I liked my cactus drawing this week! The fabulous Craftwhack started a ten day sketch along this week and the first day was ‘Blind contour drawing’. No looking, not even a peek.  The top three were all done with no looking, fun but a bit creepy. …

I got a Gelli plate for Christmas and I got it out to play with this week. I tried cutting out triangles and masking off trees or mountains (depending what you see!). I used card stock, printer paper and wax deli paper and they all worked well but gave slightly different results in many good ways. I planted some seeds this week and snapped some polaroids. We went to the Ice Carnival in the Delmar Loop this weekend and spotted these magnificent lions as we walked down to the Carnival.  They are guarding City Hall and doing a fine job. Spotted at the Scientology Church on Delmar.  What if you don’t pass?  No personality?  Yikes. How was your week?  I hope it was lovely. Happy Monday!

The creek flooded recently and covered the local park in water.  Once the  water level had gone down, there was a little marble sitting in the silt.  It is pitted and chipped, but the colours are as bright as ever and it is now a part of my ‘creek marble’ collection. Seed pods and moss in the woods.  I love that moss is such a stunningly bright green. I am sketching a specific item each day this month as part of the Creative Bug and Lisa Congdon class ‘January Drawing Challenge’.  Day 8 was ‘Draw a Cat’ day. Just the right time of day to catch some shadows on the wall. Day 10 of the January Drawing Challenge was mushrooms. As you know, I have a thing for photo’ing pretty much any mushroom I see, so those photos came in handy here! Happy Monday, I hope you have a fab week ahead!

Jelly Babies!  Not easy to get hold of here, but we managed to get the teen a massive tub of them.  I also found this article on the BBC about the sweet treats we love to bite the heads off. A favourite Christmas present was the ‘Adventure’ G.I. Joe complete with Yeti! I think they are having a playful wrestle in this picture… A pile of presents I received!  Yay!  I love the Jamie cookbook and I am so happy to be a proud owner.  I like to make notes in my cookbooks which I don’t think the library would approve of! I also got some sketchbooks with kraft paper inside which will make a nice change from the usual white paper.  My new Micron pens are tucked inside this fab deer pencil case (I think it is a make up bag, but I have reallocated it). One of my most favourite Christmas treats is fresh roast chestnuts.  I like to mash them up and make a sauce with them, although I can quite …

A week to Christmas!  Oh my.  Are you all ready?  I pretty much am, presents are almost wrapped and food is bought. 1. I made some balm for Christmas presents and it smells divine.  Just the right amount of citrus and calming clary sage.  I might need to make some for me! 2. I visited my friend’s new lovely salon this week. 3 and 4. Time to make gingerbread houses!  The kids make them every year and I am so pleased that at 11 and 14 years, they still want to make these sweet masterpieces.  One was made with graham crackers and the other one was made the traditional method with cut out gingerbread cookies which we made the day before. Fun! 5. I picked up this smashing bag at a flea market on Sunday, it is a 1950’s Olson Travel hand luggage bag and it is in great shape. Hurrah for bargains and gingerbread houses!  Have a lovely week and happy Monday x

One+Four=Life. Weekly Photos 49/52.

Frosty mornings are upon us and last week was chock full of them.  By the afternoon it is usually milder though when the sun has been out all day.  I like the crunchy mornings with hats and gloves and a brisk walk to school. At the weekend we went to the Farmer’s Market at Schlafly Brewery and picked up some lovely mushrooms from Ozark Forest Mushroom farm. These are heading for a noodle soup. I also bought some dried serrano chili peppers from them which I will throw into soups and roasting veg. This photo just cracks me up!  My cousin sent it to my now 11 year old for his birthday, it is hilarious!  A balloon in the shape of a bull.  Ha! These cakes were for the birthday boy this weekend.  I used this feature from Frankie magazine as inspiration.  I used vanilla cake for the ‘bun’ and brownie for the ‘burger!  The ‘lettuce’ is green taffy rolled flat and the ‘ketchup’ is red icing. Simple and effective, just how I like things …
