What are you Reading now?

I have had ‘The Earth Hums in B Flat’ by Mari Strachan for a couple of years and never picked it up, until this week when I gave up on ‘Hawthorn and Child’ by Keith Ridgeway which I would like to have another go at.  Do you read a book all the way through every time? Or do you give up part way in? I will often leave a book if I am not getting into it, or sometimes I just don’t read it regularly enough and I find myself clueless every time in pick it up again, which is what happened with ‘Hawthorn and Child’ I think.

I am liking ‘The Earth Hums in B Flat’ so far and I think I will make it to the end.  I don’t even try to finish books I don’t like, do you finish them anyway and announce your dislike only when each page has been read and turned?  I am sometimes very bad and give up on a book only 50 pages in, less sometimes.  Surely if it is not your cup of tea by then, it won’t be.

I like non fiction and instructional books too and I love to own them whereas I will usually borrow a novel from the library.  The pressure of having a library book which has to be returned is good for me and my slow reading habit because I only have a set time to read it. This is usually only a two week period as I often gravitate to the newly published books which everyone wants to read and therefore a line is waiting behind me, looking over my shoulder to see if I am done yet.   I borrowed the new Wally Lamb book last week and almost gave it straight back to the library, not because I don’t want to read it, I do, but because it is a big ‘un and I know I won’t finish it in two weeks. Might need to buy that one..

Talking of non fiction, I came across this book set called ‘illustration school’ by the Japanese illustrator Sachiko Umoto. The books themselves are cute as a button and they are called ‘let’s draw cute animals’, ‘let’s draw plants and small creatures’ and ‘let’s draw happy people’. What can I say, who doesn’t want to draw all of those things. I know I do! There is another one about to be published called ‘let’s draw magical colour’, yes please!  Time to drag out the pencils and sketchbooks methinks.

Children’s books are a huge part of reading in our house, I still read every night and at the minute Bodhi and I are reading ‘Muddle Earth’ by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell who are some of my favourites writers and illustrators. It is taking us a while to read this one, but it is a good read, a great adventure with some wonderful characters in true Riddell/Stewart style.

I am still hanging onto picture books because they are such a joy and I want to be able to read them aloud until my kids leave home.  Some still qualify I think, but alas I don’t get away with many.   One of the best I have recently found in the library is ‘The Mischevians’ by William Joyce. Lots of hilarious mysteries solved in this book with Willam Joyce’s amazing and detailed illustrations.

Any recommendations?  Don’t forget to share.  See you tomorrow for Six Word Saturday.

Thursday selfie

20131107-131610.jpg

I think it was Courtney at Click it Up a Notch who suggested a regular self portrait for the Project 365 challenge.  So I allocated Thursday as my selfie day.  A decision I question today as I have a cold and I am wearing my crazy heart covered sweatshirt.

I know, I know, if you are planning a photo of yourself why put on your most bonkers sweatshirt?  Surely put on your most lovely outfit?   This morning my goal was to be dressed to get Bodhi  to school and keep warm and I have heard that PJ’s are not an acceptable choice, unless you are a high school student (then it appears to be the rules).

So, here I am au natural.  Well if you ignore the funky finish on the photobooth photos courtesy of IncrediBooth.  I like the ‘bokeh’ (funny little lights) all over my face and I could have totally got away with the bad sweatshirt choice because you can’t see it.  Oh well, now the secret is out!

At least I am not in PJ’s….

Updating my blogroll

I have added a few blogs to my blogroll today as I realized that some of the ones I read lots are missing.  I also picked some fab posts I have found today.  Take a look.

I want to make one of these felt coffee cup cozies

Always wondered what to do with extra confetti?  Lots of good ideas here .  I like 16 and 17 best.

Baked donuts have to be good for you don’t they?

Let’s try this test to see what magic we can find in colour.  My test score was 29, and nearly sent my eyes squiffy!

Who doesn’t need a printable book to record ideas in.

Finally this is a heart lifting and encouraging post as I wade into National Blog Post Month (NaBloPoMo).

I also picked you a bunch of Autumn colour.  See how nice I am!  Happy Wednesday, I hope your sun is shining bright.

CatsEatDogs Earthy Heart pendant

20131105-125902.jpg Do you have an earthy heart? I think I do, I like being outdoors, running, walking anywhere – to the library, to school, to the gym, wandering through the little wooded area at the end of our street or hiking a hilly trail.  I don’t even care if it is raining or snowing although I am not a fan of frying under the hot sun.
While I am outside I am gathering colours and textures. Taking photos, gathering acorns and empty acorn cups or vibrant leaves to press flat and crisp when I get home. I am always finding pressed leaves in the diary or in one of my fat notebooks which I have kept from the year or years past. Crispy but still vibrant leaves tucked into the pages for future discovery.

20131105-130456.jpg In this heart, I have used some earth colours without making it a season specific piece. I don’t want to be told when I can wear a piece of jewelry by making it too Autumny or holiday specific, so I am not going to tell you either. No holiday jewelry will be made by me, sorry Santa you are not coming onto one of my necklaces, nor you Miss Halloween witch!

I am not a fan of occasion/season/holiday specific jewelry, so I like to make and wear versatile little numbers which will go anywhere with anyone and make them happy.

I want you to wear sparkles with jeans and leather with ball gowns.  Be you, be fabulous and wear what makes you happy!

Project 365 Photos 1 – 3

1/365

20131102-163902.jpg

20131103-124348.jpg
The first week of the Click it Up a Notch 365 Project was a short one as we started on November 1st which was Friday, so only three photos this week.

1/365.  My very first photo taken with my camera on manual.  I love this reel of thread, remember when I found it in the box of sewing equipment at a basement sale?    The fact that it is even in focus makes me a happy girl!

2/365.  This blue and peeling door is part of the Lemp Brewery building in downtown St Louis.  I took this on my iPhone 4, no filters, just a crop.

3/365.  I was looking at the bright yellow tree above this ‘paint’ (it is coloured water in an old tin, mixed up by my youngest!) when I noticed the reflection.  It took a few goes before I got a good image of the tree in the blue paint.

I am looking forward to this year of photos.  I have completed the themed photo a day challenges before, but this one should ensure that I learn to use my camera.  Most of the daily photos I have taken before have been taken on my phone.

Do you default to your phone more than you should?  Does it matter?  I use the same apps or Photoshop to edit camera photos and phone photos.  Do you edit lots?

Whatever happened to snapping a great shot and not messing about with it afterwards?   A whole other challenge I think!

To infinity (scarf) and beyond!

I have a scarf problem as you know and I do love to wear them as much as I can. Autumn is ideal scarf weather and lots of ways to wear scarves is a must.
Infinity scarves are super easy to wear, but most of my scarves are the old fashioned flat variety.
So I tried knotting the ends of one of my big scarves and ta-dah, I could wear it another way. I wrapped it twice around my neck and it works like a dream.
This works best on big scarves made from fine fabric, so don’t go knotting up your woolly thick knit scarf!
I am off to find more scarves to transform with a couple of knots.   Happy sunny Sunday!

Six word Saturday

20131102-162253.jpg
I came across this shabby case full of life at a junk shop today. There were purses, a powder compact, books and an address book stashed within.
I find things like this fascinating and almost wanted to buy it just so I could keep it just as it is, with just a wipe over.

Have a lovely weekend, see you tomorrow!

NaBloPoMo and Project 365

I rather hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew this November.  I have taken on two ‘challenges’ both of which are blog related (no, I am not participating in Mo’vember, there will be no facial hair in my future).    I am hoping that I will improve in my blog post writing this month and my photos will improve in a year long project which happens to start today.

No  matter how much I would love to write a book when I grow up, it is most likely not going to be a novel, so although NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) would be an amazing way to kick start that novel, I will not be the author.  However the fine folk at WordPress and Blog Her are joining forces this year for this year’s November of NaBloPoMo (National Blog Post Month) which is within my capabilities I think.  I hope anyway, I will let you know in about a month!

Project 365 is a daily photograph challenge and hosted by Click it Up a Notch which is a wonderful website full of tips, information and friendly people.  For this I must take a photo a day and blog them.  I am going to post the photos weekly on a Monday.  As a sub challenge, I want to try and take nearly all of the photos on my big girl camera using Manual only.  Now this may not sound like much of a challenge, but I always always use the point and shoot options on my camera and I am determined to move over to M and leave behind the green rectangle and his automatic friends.

Learning to use my camera properly is making my brain hurt, so I go right back to Mr Green Rectangle.  So, for this challenge, unless I really can’t, I want to use my camera and use it properly for every photo.  I am hoping that by the end of the month or the year I will understand the numbers and letters I have to use and in which order and when and how.

So, that was my first NaBloPoMo post and here is my first Project 365 photo. Happy Dance!

Project3651

That there photo of a lovely vintage cotton reel is the very first photo I have successfully taken using manual on my camera with no help from anybody, all by myself!

Are you doing either or both of these challenges?  Do you want to?  I have put the links in for you to follow if you fancy.

Foggy morning

Last night was rainy and warm and this morning was humid and foggy. I do like interesting weather, so fog is a good morning for me. A good storm (if I am inside or on the porch) is also a winner in my view. Even pouring rain or bucketing snow make a change. I of course love the blue skies we usually see, whether the temps are warm or freezing cold, but the weather odd bods are what makes the interesting days.

Thankfully it was only the air full of fog today, I started with a fab boxing class which is my favourite class ever, I love to beat up an inanimate object once a week! I picked up the new (still one issue behind Australia though) Frankie magazine and finished getting ready for the Halloween party at school tomorrow.

20131030-142127.jpg

Now I am here chatting to you and listening to the new ‘London Grammar’ album.

Are you trick or treating for Halloween? It may rain here, so let’s hope not (no, not even an exciting storm would be welcome). Costumes will be worn at school where the kids have a little parade around the neighbourhood and then we have parties for each class.

We will be making these spider webs made with paper plates and egg cartons. The kids will make ‘dirt and worms’ to eat which (in case you are worried) is chocolate pudding with crushed cookies and gummy worms. Yum.

Happy Halloween and safe trick or treating.  Oh and try and not eat all of the kids candy!  What do you do with the candy?  We call on ‘Ezmeralda the Candy Witch’ and she comes and takes the candy away and leaves a little treat (tooth fairy style).  Poof!  Candy out of sight.

Shadow on the street.

It has been a busy week, dentist appointments, parent teacher conferences, gymnastics, karate belt test, sleepovers, chilli cook off at school and a street Halloween party.  Phew.

I finished watching ‘Derek’ on Netflix this week and I loved it.  What are you watching?  Anything I need to catch up on?

Have a fab week!
