Get Messy Season of Seasons week 7

This week I have embraced more collage in my Get Messy Season of Seasons journal and I have been messing about with spray paint, lace and doilies as I have been creating along with Caylee and Lauren in the Creative Bug daily practice classroom. I bought a pile of lacy doilies and vintage trimmings at an estate sale this weekend so I could wait to get printing and stenciling with them. Happy Thursday x

Get Messy Season of Seasons week 2

A few pages and cards from week 2 of the Season of Seasons over at Get Messy Art Journal.  In this found book as journal, I am covering some pages completely and some I am embracing the original page.  Thankfully the paper is not too thin so it is pretty nice to work in and the spiral binding is not getting on my nerves like I thought it would. So hurrah! I have been making marks and using these pages as collage as well as using some flowers I have been playing with as a pattern on top of collage, paint and gesso (the page with the flowers was a hot mess and needed a layer of gesso very badly!). As well as the book I am working in, I have a pile of old library catalogue cards which I am painting and doodling on.  I got hold of some glassine bags which fit the cards in perfectly so I am pleased with that. The season of seasons is rolling on and I am enjoying …

Art journaling, bookmaking and sketching.

I felt like I was neglecting my little art journal for the Season of Play at Get Messy this week. So one evening I picked it up along with some collage pieces I had chosen, cut out and left to one side. Rather than wait for inspiration to strike I decided to just go for it and make a page with these ladies, a constellation map and some butterflies with a few swipes of paint.                                                                                                                                                        I have also just signed up for Sketchbookery so I did a little sketching practice on this page too in the form of a flower …

I made a giant book!

I had a case of FOMO this week or keeping up with the Joneses or whatever you want to call it. I saw two different Instagram friends post two books they had made, one was super chunky and amazing, the other was a small pamphlet stitched book made with kraft paper and what looked like old book pages. Well, you know me, old books and bookbinding, I loved them both and wanted to make something similar to combine the chunky and the vintage paper. As this is the beginning of the season of play in the Get Messy art journaling community, I decided to go for it and make a basic structure so I didn’t loose my mind but make it nice and full so I didn’t run out of pages (ha! no shortage of pages here). I used a fancy paper bag as the cover which I reinforced with a cereal box and I cut and folded 17 signatures each with five sheets. The pages are from an old cookbook, an encyclopedia, an old …

Old photos and why I think they are fabulous.

I started collecting old photos one at a time, carefully selecting each one.  As I have carried on gathering other people’s family photos, my greatest finds are a box or an envelope full  of photos to explore.  An ancient album from the turn of the century to marvel at the fashions and cars of the time is a happy few minutes of browsing for me. I just love to look at the characters in the photos and where the photos were taken, some photos I have are from the St Louis area and it is cool to see landmarks then and now. This group is so full of characters, I wonder who or what they are all looking at. I feel like this picture is a novel waiting to be written. “Don and me” written in biro on the front of the photo. I want those silver sandals! I love the photos with the cars of the time and the way people took the photos to highlight the vehicles. Two meals at the same table …

Daily Moleskine Pages. February 2018.

February pages went swimmingly!  I like almost all of them (which is frankly more than I can say for the January pages).  The beginning of my Moleskine daily planner is starting to get full and the pages are getting crinkly with arty stuff! I haven’t improved on creating absolutely every day but I do make sure each page is filled even if I do two days at a time.  I accept this as I go through my 365 daily project and I will continue to not worry about it. I have enjoyed using my Micron pen to get details in these pages.  There is also collage, old photos, mandalas and bugs! Are you doing a 365 project of any kind?  How is it going? Things I am excited about Tuesday.

I hope you like the natty title to this post!!! I was supposed to write it yesterday with the short and to the point ‘Marvellous Monday’ title but blow me down, yesterday came and went and no blog post in sight.  Much as I am tempted to keep the title, I decided to dream up another not so short but still to the point header for today! What is getting me excited today, well I am glad you asked, because these things are – Ice cream and sprinkles even though it has been raining for two days straight. Bitten by Witch Fever is a very inspiring book which I have been drawing (literally in my art journal) all kinds of ideas from.  It had to go back to the library today so sorry no picture, I recommend borrowing it from your library if you can, it is chock full of old wallpaper designs full of detail and colour ideas. My two art journals for this Get Messy season (affiliate link here,  which means I will …

Weekly Photos 2017. 39/52

1. One of the first pages in my new art journal. Just the beginning, or is it done?  We shall see if I add any more to it.  I think I will. 2. I found a fabulous black acorn in the woods, there are hundreds of acorns on the woodland floor but only this black one. 3. Teeny tiny white mushrooms growing precariously on a thin twig. 4. A dead tree against a white wall, I like the shapes! 5. We went digging in the woods this weekend and found a couple of marbles (hurrah!) and half a bowl. Happy Monday x SaveSave

Art Marks 30 Day Summer Challenge.

I finished this challenge a week ago and I really liked filling up my little paperback sketchbook which I made from a vintage paper back book cover and added different papers to the inside. This is the full mini sketchbook I used solely for this project.  The 30 Days of mark making challenge was hosted by Rae Missigman. Here is the second half of my 30 day journey, find the first half here. Day 12. Blotted. I don’t even know what prompt this was for, but I like it!! Day 13 Stippled. Day 14 Fluid. Day 15 Varied. Day 16 and 17 Mirrored and Dripped. Day 18 and 19 Many and Scattered. Day 20-21 Scratched and collaged. Day 22 Torn. Day 23 Lettered. Day 24 Remnants. Day 25 Found. Day 26, 27, 28 Tattered, collected and metallic (can you tell the end of the book was near!) Day 29 and 30 Stitched and closed, I stitched a ribbon around the whole book to close it. ‘I Like’ Friday

Lots of things to like this fine Friday! A modest trip to Art Mart to get some book tape.  Came out with deep violet high flow acrylic, gold fluid acrylic a new sepia pen and a Jon Snow key chain (for my teen).  Any art shop which sells Funko Pop key chains has my vote! Moon phase stickers from Stickerdoodles. I keep borrowing this fabulous book from the library, it might be time to buy it! Stunning cigarette cards from the gorgeous shop of Beets and Birch.  I adore these cards as I already have lots which my grandma gave me.  Mine are a mix of tea cards and cigarette cards. They were given away in each pack of tea or cigarettes until the 1970’s I think.  Grandma kept all hers and gave them to me in the 1980’s carefully kept in a ‘British Home Stores’ bag! I am very pleased to have these cards to add to my collection. The new Art Journaling magazine has two of my Get Messy friends inside it’s covers …
